Gustav Holst, most of you will know was the composer of The Planets, a piece that is a major part of our musical heritage here in the UK. The council in Cheltenham wants to close down his museum..
The Holst Birthplace Museum is located in Cheltenham, England. Sadly, the Cheltenham Council is withdrawing their grant to the museum and therefore this will mean closure unless something can be done. The birthplace museum was founded by Gustav's daughter, Imogen Holst, in 1974 during centennial ceremonies for Holst's birth. The museum houses a number of lot of mementoes, including the piano on which Holst composed The Planets, also pictures, books, some letters and manscripts. The Holst Birthplace Museum is one of only three composer museums in England.
On 25th May 2004 there will be a Gala concert in the Cheltenham Town Hall which will be given by the soprano Dame Felicity Lott and Julian Lloyd Webber (who will play the Invocation with piano), Eugene Asti will be the pianist. Also, in a mixed programme of Mozart, Richard Strauss, Purcell, Duparc, and Rodger and Hammerstein, there will be a Holst World Premiere–the aria "Behold the Sun's Uprising" from the 2nd Act of the unperformed opera Sita. Please visit the Holst Birthplace Museum website if you can help out with a donation or other support.
