The announcement by Bayer that it is withdrawing it’s GM Maize variety Chardon LL is fantastic news and represents a significant victory for the anti-GM movement. It is another blow against the introduction of GM crops into the UK.

However, the struggle against GM is not over, and this should not be seen as the final victory. There are many other fronts to be fought, and indeed Bayer themselves have not yet pulled out completely. They continue to have two genetically modified oilseed rape varieties in the pipeline and seeking approval for growing in the UK. They also continue to be one of the Big 3 companies pushing GM crops worldwide.

The withdrawal of Chardon LL was one of the aims of the Boycott Bayer campaign and we are overjoyed to see it happen. Boycott Bayer are presently considering the next steps to ensure Bayer gives up on GM in the UK altogether. Watch this space…
