Operation Fortress Commons

Gee Whiz | 24.03.2004 10:26 | Anti-militarism | London

Considering "al Qaida" and "suicide bombers" never target politicians or government institutions, only the general public, these Orwellian measures are obviously to protect the Police State representatives from angry peasants with pitchforks!

A HUGE concrete wall is to go up around the Houses of Parliament to ward off terror attacks.

The planned replacement of Westminster's historic iron railings by a forbidding 15ft-high barrier topped with razor wire is stark evidence of the security threat now facing Britain.

Tougher measures were already on the way to protect Premier Tony Blair and MPs.

Now the embarrassing scaling of Big Ben by two anti-war pro- testers last weekend has added urgency to a clampdown dubbed Operation Fortress Commons.

A minister close to its planning said: "We must start taking security here seriously if we want to avoid a strike at the heart of our democracy."

Police with shoot-to-kill orders will patrol Parliament's perimeter, currently protected from car bombers by concrete blocks.

English Heritage opposes removal of the iron railings but a senior security source said: "A terrorist strike is now inevitable and certain changes must be made."

today prescott said in parliament, that this was just 'press tattle' i.e. it won't happen. Remains to be seen whether hes speaking the truth or not.

Governements often float ideas like this to gauge reaction, then pretend they never suggested it, then a few months or years later, bring in new laws to make it happen.

Probably wants to scare off other people thinking of repeating this excellent anti-war spectacle.
