We the culprits

thoughts & feelings on the recent tragedy in Spain

I suffer:
For those who are dead.
For those who killed.

And I fear:
The imminent media and political implementation and manipulation.
The finger that is already pointed and those which will be pointed against the apparently guilty parties.
The hate of the Spanish people and of the Europeans against these presumptive guilty parties – and the consequences.

And I fear because I have not yet heard a single voice that is capable of saying “This is a consequence of that same hate, of those same accusing fingers, of instability, of fear, of suffering, of the crisis, of all the crises, of the situation in my country and in the world.”

I fear because I have not yet heard a single voice that said: “This is the result of something that goes beyond a political battle or an act of terrorism.”

The truth, however, goes beyond the guilty parties and concerns all of us, because that hate is present in every single one of us and there isn’t a single guilty person; it is a collective responsibility.

I fear that, in this cruel and bloody act, the roots will be forgotten and only the vivid images remembered.

I fear that no one will say: “This, is also my fault.”

Above all, I am terrified that nobody will say: “Even I have the responsibility of preventing a similar act: for myself, for those around to me, for those whom I love and for everyone.”

We need to demolish hatred, insecurity, fear, suffering, crises, the immediate and ineffectual culpability, which are the roots of acts like this.

We need to be capable of a sincere and firm grasp on our collective consciences, understanding that we are the responsible ones for what happens to ourselves and to others.
