quick translation of declarations by CNT and CGT about Madrid bombings

fwd | 12.03.2004 15:01 | World

This is what the CNT had to say (roughly translated for speed):

CNT Madrid shows its repulsion at the attacks of the 11th March

Madrid dawned this dyed morning of blood. The south of the capital,
zone where most of the working-class of the city is concentrated, was
the scene of one of the most atrocious and wild massacres of its
history. For that reason, we, the workers of the Local Federation of
Unions of Madrid of the National Confederation of Labour (CNT), want
to show more sincere ours and energetic it repulses today towards the
produced attacks, day 11 of March of 2004, in the city in which we
lived and/or worked.

The authors have demonstrated not to know or not to at least have no
type of class conscience. It seems lie that, to day of today, in the
heat of century XXI, we must continue remembering that us workers are
as equal here in Madrid as in Cordova or in Barakaldo, the Bisbal,
Kandahar or Baghdad.

Right now, it is 7:30 in the afternoon and the news that we have
tells us of 186 dead and more than 1000 wounded. To the majority the
life was denied to them when they were going to work in the capital.
We want to express our condolences and solidarity with the victims
and their relatives who are most important at this moment. It does us
very hard to think that in addition many were immigrants of inside
and outside the peninsula, people who had come to our city, that is
of all, to improve their conditions of life.
We also appealed to the political institutions, parties, unions,
social mass media and other actors not to look for any type of yield
or gain, is with original or electioneering aims, in the suffering of
the victims and its families. Please, do not make also of the pain a
weapon,

And the CGT:

The General Confederation of Labour (CGT) condemns the brutally-
committed multiple murder in Madrid

The brutal attack of today in Madrid, with several died and hurt
explosions and tens of is for the CGT a miserable action and lacking
any ideological meaning. From CGT we condemn this brutal attack
reiterating to us in which the indiscriminate violence and the deaths
of innocent people never are just. These brutal murders lead to many
questions and many responsibilities for us to clarify, but for the
CGT it is clear that it has been an attack directed directly against
the working-class. From CGT we want to show ours more sincere support
and solidarity to the victims and relatives of this attack.

It seems to me too early to call on who is responsible, but something
should go in pointing out what a bunch of tossers the people are who
do this sort of thing. If it is ETA, it is a big departure from
previous bombings but the target is neither military nor
governmental, but predominantly working class commuters - not the
sort of people ETA normally target.
