LAST CHANCE FOR BLACKWOOD

rowan | 08.03.2004 19:31 | Oxford

A lot of the Ancient Woodland was destroyed today - including the part previously cordoned off for the dormice.

Hundreds of 2 and 300-year old trees gone.

Two cordons of 26 bailiffs stopped protesters getting to the trees, but they managed to get into the trees before the third cordon was in place.

If the remaining trees are to be saved they need more people NOW!

At this rate the whole lot will be gone in the next couple of days.

PLEASE spread the word as widely as possible - people needed NOW!

BASIC DIRECTIONS- bus to Blackwood from Cardiff or Newport (Newport is nearer). St Davids Wood visible on skyline on right hand side of valley (if coming from Cardiff- on left hand side if coming from the north) it's a 15 min walk from Blackwood High Street see directions below.

Driving - take J28 from M4, signposted A467 Brynmawr, then A4048 Tredegar and you'll find signposts to Blackwood on that road.
Along high street, find the Asda on right hand side of road-take back road straight on at a couple of roundabouts- find the Rock and Fountain pub, take road up the hill past the pub up to old railway line. Walk along track follow the yellow jackets trail of destruction, camps on the right in lovely trees.

better directions

I find these directions very confusing; ASDA is at the other end of town from the Rock + Fountain! A better idea is to ask directions to the Rock + Fountain, then follow the directions from there, ie:

head up the hill (with the R+F on your left) and take the little residential street on your left just as the road curves right (near the top). You'll soon see the disused railway track on your right. Follow it in the same direction you've been walking, until you see Kerry camp on the bank above you. For Jordan camp just keep going a bit further.

More dangerous destruction!

12.03.2004 17:42

From 10th March:

More trees down today but not as many as yesterday - they managed to stop work a bit earlier.

One of the construction workers cut down a tree with someone in it! Luckily he wasn't hurt as he managed to grab hold of another tree before he fell.

Other trees with people in were hit by other trees falling.

Incidents like these, and worse, have been captured on video and photos but if anyone's going there could you take a camera too? The more cameras there the better!

Costain are in the High Court tomorrow to try and stop the leave to appeal, more news as soon as I hear.

AND THEY STILL NEED MORE PEOPLE!!
