Women Under Occupation!

New Threats to Women's Rights in Iraq

Iraqi women have been besieged by violence, unemployment and other crises set off by the occupation of their country. Now they face a new challenge: the Iraqi Governing Council has voted to cancel the “Personal Status Law,” a set of rules that has long provided opportunities for and protected the rights of women. The cancellation of this law would mean that Iraqi women would have to rely on religious institutions for personal issues such as marriage and divorce, rather than being allowed to use civilian courts for these matters.
