International Women's Day Events Honour Women of Palestine

PSC | 27.02.2004 11:15 | Gender | Repression | Social Struggles | London | Oxford

Events for International Women's Day, from the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. We invite a global exchange of solidarity message for Palestinian women between women's groups, individuals, and solidarity groups everywhere! If you would like to send a message to be read out on March 6 in London please feel welcome.

Palestinian women are to be honoured at a series of events marking
International Women's Day to be held by Palestine Solidarity
Campaign branches throughout England and Wales.

In Oxford, 'Women of Palestine' takes place on March 6 at the town hall, where Palestinian women will describe life under occupation, and Karma Nabulsi from Nuffield College talks about the refugees.
Sat 6th March, Oxford Town Hall, St. Aldates 3.30-6 pm FREE

In Newcastle, on the 4th, a Gaza activist describes the impact of the apartheid wall Israel is building on Palestinian land, and an International Solidarity Movement volunteer speaks on her experiences.

In London on Saturday, 6 March, 'Celebrating Palestinian Women', at Sahara Nights, Kings Cross, promises to be a night of seriously celebratory solidarity, with music from top female DJs, DJ Ritu and Qurra, guest stars and speakers, Palestinian food, crafts, and dance lessons. This is a fundraiser for urgently-needed campaigning work against the wall, and to highlight the devastating ways this 'abomination', as Gerald Kaufmann recently described it, is impacting on women and children - who are bearing a 'special and enduring burden' from the occupation, according to a recent UN report.

'At a time when the Palestinians are undergoing great hardship, there may seem little to celebrate,' says PSC's Executive Committee Women's Officer, Diane Langford. 'However, we believe the tenacity and courage shown by Palestinian women - whether under occupation and apartheid, or in the diaspora - when simply to survive and work for personal and political rights represents successful non-violent resistance, deserves recognition and support.'
