locals stop work at blackwood

18.2.04 For the second day running locals together with activists from the camps have stopped work at Blackwood, out- numbering bailiffs and Costain workers and sending the chainsaws packing. The involvement of local people in the active defence of the site is a crucial development- these people deserve our support!!

Presence of video cameras ensured bailiffs behaved themselves today, after spending the day before roughing up local kids sitting in the way of machinery. According to people on site, in one particularly bad incident a bailiff punched a minor in the stomach- an event photographed by a local man. Nice to know that Costain and Caerphilly council are prepared to let thugs trash teenagers in order to get their filthy road built.
Machinery continues to be operated on route (when we aren’t stopping it), though most of the beautiful wood remains untouched due to aforementioned presence of dormice, bats, protestors and other enemies of the state. Well- substantiated rumours abound that Costain/ the bailiffs may try to steam in early one morning if numbers are too low, meaning that mid –week site sitting is a massive priority. We are still buying time here, but desperately need more sorted people to come and build defences- the camps are still mostly ground, not tree- based- and to HELP STOP WORK.
Daily positive developments on the protected habitat/ legal/ EU side of things as well (see previous postings)- these habitats can be saved!!! Direct action is continuing to work here- the camps are growing daily- more visitors from near and far.

Play, and memory of chidhood.

"Technology is produced by capitalist companies and governments for their use. These technologies are a product of the logic of capital. Our critique and our attacks must reach beyond the most recent advances of the technological system to other technological means of exploitation and alienation. Elves of the night, there is so much to do!" -from pre 2002.

Looking at a river - there lay a supermarket trolly on its side. It had filled with stones. Further down on the opposite bank the changed current was eating its way into the land.

Further down, a fertiliser bulk delivery bag had enough stone in it to part block the river bed, so the river ran much faster, and when there were spates, was digging a deep pool, the stability of the whole river bed was endangered. The deepness worked its way upstream so the spoil cut down by the stream was quickly carried away.

There is of course climate change, that is bringing heavier rain so these things will happen naturally and more quickly, George Bush blocking Kyoto is surely on the side of The Elves of the Night.

Where is the unemployed miner's drift mine? There was seam less than two inches thick he used to work quiety and secretly to win house coal. A narrow entrance widened just enough to let air pass the body as he worked to extract a small shopping bag full of coal. It was impossible to turn, one had to crawl out backwards. He could not stay long unless he had a mate with a small pump to blow in air, but that would have been a dead give away, and eveyone would be at it, making it so far to crawl it became dangerous. Debries now hide the entrance. In fact there has been a major rockfall in one such place.
