Leamington Spark Issue 4 now out!

Leamington Spark | 17.02.2004 09:39 | Indymedia

In this issue (16th Feb 2004), the Leamington Spark (a radical newsletter from the town of Leamington Spa) burns brightly about – Depleted Uranium weapons near Leamington?, the regressive nature of council tax, community renewable energy, a new left-of-Labour political party, and the full magnitude of climate change.

(Forwarded from the email sent to Leamington Spark subscribers)

Greetings Spark subscribers!

This email serves two purposes:- to tell you
about the latest Spark, and (in light of changes
in personal circumstances amongst the current
Spark team) to ask for your assistance in keeping
the Spark going.

Spark 4
~~~~~~~
We are happy to announce that issue 4 (16th Feb 2004)
of the Leamington Spark is now out, and can be
downloaded from the usual place:-
 http://latest-info.com/leamaltnews
In this issue, the Spark burns brightly about:-
* Depleted Uranium weapons stored near Leamington? We
cover both the horrific effects of DU on the citizens
of Iraq and the possible dangers to our own health of
nearby DU storage.
* Council Tax. In light of further steep Council Tax
rises, the Spark analyses the regressive nature of the
tax.
* Local renewable energy project:- a review of a
recent Leamington event where the possibility of
developing grassroots renewable energy projects was
explored.
* Crash, burn, extinguish! A reply from a concerned
reader pointing out that Spark 3's concern over
climate change was fine as far as it went, but that it
didn't go nearly far enough in highlighting the full
horror of what climate change means for humanity and
the planet in general.
* RESPECT - The Unity Coalition. There's a new
left-of-Labour party on the scene, and it recently had
a public meeting in Coventry. In this opinion piece
RESPECT's prospects are analysed.
Spark 5 should be out within a few weeks, and
we will announce the next Spark 6 meeting soon.
HELP NEEDED - ESPECIALLY TECHNICAL!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The current Spark team, which tends to average about
six members, is about to enter a difficult patch
because of changing personal circumstances. Help in
all areas is always welcome, but technical assistance
will be particularly useful in the coming months, with
the current web/email/design monkey leaving the area
shortly.

To ensure the continued survival of the Spark, it
might be necessary to enlist the support of someone
who thinks they would be able to do the graphical
layout and editing for the Spark. That is, given the
finished content of the Spark, would be able to
produce the final newsletter. Obviously if you wanted
to continue the current style (which is simply done in
Word, then converted to PDF and text) that would be
fine...but if you wanted to do it more professionally,
obviously we wouldn't object!

If you think you can help, drop us an email at
 leamaltnews@yahoo.co.uk.

Until the next time,

Cheers,

Leamington Spark
