Cyderdelic Scum are Back on TV Tonight (digital)

west country | 16.02.2004 20:01 | Indymedia | London

The unique brand of anarcho comedy that is cyderdelic is back on our tv screens tonight (digital viewers only tho).

11pm tonight
(mon 16th feb 04)
BBC3 Digital Channel

Cyderdelic are a spoof anarcho protest band who travel about smashin' it up big time.

Some of their stuff is pretty funny it has to be said. However in their comedy they fail to make even a single concession to politics or that there is some seriousness in the issues. this has pissed a lot of people off.

They had a series on BBC 2 which included their mayday antics (check the above banner pic) . This time expect to see them at last years glastonbury (where one of them was punched in the face onstage after multiple power problems with their set), at the Evian G8 protests (where they were spotted skulking around Geneva and painting on the walls) and of course the big anti-war demos.

One of them was also punched onstage at the Reclaim The Futures Party in Feb last year - there was a big argument after that with many people shouting no violence and others happy to see them get a slap. Prior to their performance they had asked if they could film the night and were told no. They then tried to persuade indymedia folks to secretly film it for them and give them a copy! They have also on other occasions been caught with hidden cameras after being told that people didn't want them to film.

Funny? Yes.
Onside? No.

Their website is at:  http://www.cyderdelic.com
(they have some pretty funny songs and video clips)

nah, they're funny - that's why they keep getting a smack in the mouth, from people who take themselves too seriously and don't like looking in the mirror

they were shit on the 11 o'clock show, but the mayday/stonehenge/ganja day one was like a fly-on-the-wall documentary of my life. very unnerving, i was with 20 yards of almost every shot

I'd say this should stay on the newswire. Cyderdelic are the main voice of anarchist comedy on television. Well, at least the most obvious ones, and although they stink it's worth noting the fact.

The tv show last night was terrible, really terrible. Crap sequences showing them DJ'ing at someones wedding, at a car boot sale, at a sperm donation centre and trying to get a loan from a bank, all to raise funds for their super veggie burger business. To be honest I was quite happy to see it was so bad as the other series was much funnier, but I didn't like them. The idea had some mileage in it, but that's run out by the looks of last night.

They were also seen outside macdonalds being cautioned about leaflets which could get them arrested for incitement, and opening their squatted cafe.

It also showed footage of them in Geneva for the G8 protests. It showed them taunting the police from a crowd of people on the street where the IndyMedia centre at L'usine was (the centre that was raided by black block cops and riot police firing concussion grenades) Ha ha, very funny.

Anyway they'll be using footage from geneva again as that's just some of the stuff they shot out there.

Here's some pictures taken in Geneva (they were pretty soon being taunted by someone who didn't like their brand of comedy).

i saw them at glastonbury several hours after they got twatted by someone and asked the main one if he understood why people hated them. he just said i don't want to talk about it and walked off.

you're going home in an ambient anbulance

touchy?

17.02.2004 19:06

I think they definately touch a nerve

but surely

the idea that someone could make a lifestyle out of
'protest' or 'dissent'

is

hypocrasized by the concept
that someone could make a career out of
satirising the idea that someone could make a lifestyle out of
'protest' or 'dissent'...

it would be a good sketch but it isn't it's a 'career move' for 'em...

mind you as an ex-bus dwelling special brew / cider drinking
stripey shirt dog on a string pikey myself!!!

i think the stereotype is as worthy a target as any

i lived on a camp in Falmouth , cornwall
[we were the brew-crew]
[big up the toxic sound system!!!!]
love and bread-head free humour

I think they're absolutely hilarious. I met them in Geneva and had a proper chat with them and they are sound blokes who are surprisingly down to earth and knowledgable about the protest movement. IT IS A COMEDY. THEY ARE COMEDY CHARACTERS. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? Any of you who are getting worked up over them obviously see a bit of yourselves in them.
