A nation of sickos

Why are we so sick?

Junk mail reveals a worrying statistic
Junk mail reveals a worrying statistic

The other day I came across a startling fact in a bit of junk mail that's probably gone out to every house in Sheffield. The pamphlet was advertising some new service by a chemists chain store for people who get repeated prescriptions. It claimed that 22 million people in this country now get repeat prescriptions. Twenty two million people!!! Wow, in a country of 60 million that's over a third of the population. That's a lot of sick people.

But that's only counting those on repeat prescriptions. There are, of course, many other maladies and afflictions where people are not any kind of drugs at all. These include short term stuff like colds, flu, infections and digestive problems to things like alziemers disease, osteoporosis and many others where there are no suitable drugs or, for some, the side effects of the drug are worse than the illness. Add to that people recovering from things like broken bones or wounds from accidents etc and that's probably getting on for, or even beyond, half the population of this country.

About a year ago I saw a documentary covering the lives of some people who lived a primitive existence out in the wilds of some part of the former USSR - Siberia I think it was. They lived their lives in temporary structures, moving often in the harsh cold climate. Their food came from hunting whatever animals they could find. One of the questions the documentary team asked them was, "What do you do when you get ill?"

Their answer was simple. "We don't get ill," they replied. This confirmed something a friend had been telling me some time earlier. There are or have been some societies out there, so called primitive societies, where the people live from birth to death and never get ill at all. The whole idea of illness is alien to them.

So you might wonder how it is that our society, with its obsessions about hygiene and health and with supposedly the most advanced healthcare ever, has become such an incredibly sick society. And if anything things seem to be getting worse with increases in mental illnesses like depression and physical problems like obseity.

I suppose there's a whole range of possible answers. One claim is that we are living longer now. According to government statistics (up to 1998) we now live 5 years longer than in 1971. Men live to an average of 75 and women live to almost 80. So maybe some of our lives are extended through the use of drugs. But that certainly doesn't account for half the population. And some of the so called primitive societies lived just as long as we do. Old age should not necessarily mean sickness.

Another factor could be that the drug companies are inventing or at least promoting new illnesses to sell us their drugs. Examples could be "problems" like attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity in children. Some children are a bit more energtic than 'normal' or are not particularly interested in their boring lessons. So instead of allowing them the time and space to let off steam they're prescribed the controversial killer drug Ritalin (methylphenidate). What makes things worse is that it could be that some smart kids maybe feigning these 'illnesses' in order to get hold of this cocaine-like substance. In the US four percent of kids are now on Ritalin. The pharmaceutical industry is the most profitable in the world.

But whatever the case with Ritalin mental health certainly accounts for a lot of health problems. According to the charity MIND 3 out 10 people experience mental health problems every year. And a big, national survey in 1999 found that 10 percent of children (aged 5-15 years) suffered from "mental disorders".

Back in the physical world there are range of possible reasons for our poor health. There's an ever increasing range of environmental pollution. Every one of us now has at least 200 different synthetic compounds inside us. Traffic in cities creates asthma and respiratory problems as well as more serious problems like cancer. Our lifestyles, at least for many people, are predominently now sedentary. Lack of exercise can cause all sort of problems from blood pressure and heart problems to back and posture problems.

Our diets are well below par. Fresh food travels miles to reach us, is mostly contaminated with chemical spays when grown, and frequently does not contain the nutrients it is supposed to. But a lot of what we eat isn't fresh food anyway as we tend to rely on prepackaged processed food instead. This makes sound economic sense especially for those with not much money. In terms of calorific intake a kingsize Mars bar is probably the best value you can get. But in terms of nutritional value is virtually useless.

So how did we get to this state of poor health? There's clearly a variety of causes. But there is one cause that underpins them all. What the difference between our society and those that never get ill? Capitalist industrialisation. Whether its from the pollution of too many cars sold to us everywhere we look or mental disorders originating from frustrating lives, poverty and consequent poor parenting the root cause is the same.

So it looks like we're heading for a time when over half the population is poorly. Perhaps we're there already. When that happens it means that ill-health will be normal and those with good health will be a minority.

There is a cure.
There is a cure.

Take one extra high-strength capsule - use only when necessary.

Cancer research claims 100,000 children die needlessly from cancer in the Third World because they are deprived of medicines to treat this condition, caused by depleted uranium. So, why not ban such weapons, and hey presto... no need for the drugs?

Oh, shit! D.U. ammo is already illegal.

It's amazing

how a nation of 'sickos' has one of the world's highest life expectancy.

And can you quote a source for '100,000 child cancer deaths from DU'?

drugs dealing - big business

dodgy drugs deal
dodgy drugs deal

There's a lot of money to be made in the drugs industry. I'd like to see some attention given to some of the big drugs companies. Pfizer are an especially dodgy company (one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world). This year we see 3 UK cities besieged by Pfizer trying to make their company look good by sponsoring a mental health art exhibition touring the UK.

'Art Works in Mental Health™'Exhibition

Birmingham Museum 13 March-16 May 2004

Edinburgh Talbot Rice Gallery 12 June-10th July 2004

Manchester Urbis Centre 2nd August-28th August 2004

Last year we paid a visit with Mad Pride to their art exhibition, sponsored by Pfizer (one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world). A rep was seen sneaking drugs to visitors at the exhibition. A free sample of drugs and text about Pfizer's dodgy activities was inserted in every catalogue. Plus a giant syringe with NO ECT written on it was sneaked past the reception and added to the other artworks in the exhibition.

i am one of those who use repeat prescriptions, for the ssri anti-depressants i take every day (and have done for several years now). it aint ideal, but it has kept me alive, with many paybacks of course. i bet lots of those 22 million are on psychiatric drugs, as well as drugs for diabetes, epilepsy, AIDS, HRT..... for those of us on extremely low incomes there isnt always a realistic alternative, as unfashionable as that may be. the people i know who are most anti-mainstream medicine have a lot of knowledge and healthy practises but they are also very intelligent, empowered, articulate, and live in large cities. where are the resources for the rest of us? and are there really alternatives for every drug treatment the NHS offers us?

Exaggeration

I think the figure is probably an exaggeration of Lloyds Pharmacys business. If they sounf popular, you going to go with them. Someone probably added 6 zeros and times the original number of repeat prescriptions by 21. (come on you smart asses - whats the answer?)

First, a lot of those repeat prescriptions will be for asthma drugs. On that subject, why should people with asthma have to PAY for those drugs, surely the tobacco and car and oil etc industries should bear the cost?

Second, another lot of those drugs will be antidepressants, and those people will sometimes have more than one sort of drug. The reason so many people are on anti depressants is because all the different psychology/counselling breeds are underrated and underused. And overpriced. And its impossible to get any of it on the NHS. But you can have dsrugs on the NHS. Apparently actual help to deal with your problems is only for those wealthy enough to afford it, the rest have to make do with some man made concoction that you then cant live without. Anyone know why this is? If you're on NHS, why cant you take the option to have psychological help rather than drugs? Is it just another example of our governments (plural) refusal to look at anything long term? Personally, If I had the money, I think I and everyone else would be better off if I had someone to help me through my brain, instead of giving the money to some drugs company and ignoring the problem.

Third, of course we're sick. We live here. Little island with too much traffic and too much inequality.

cure?

16.02.2004 09:16

the best cure for illness is of course a positive mental attitude.

most causes of illneses are capitalist inventions like pharmacutical drugs, sugary food and pollution.

I accept that people live longer now than 200 years ago but that is mainly due to clean water, small pox vacinations and less bacteria in food. The more expensive treatments to illnesses tend to only increase life expectencey a few years and they cost alot more.

clean water, small pox vaccination and health & saftey standards in food production are all against the basic free market principles. They are areas of government/social intervention because of socially unnaceptable situations.

incorrect assertions etc...

17.02.2004 19:39

most....what a word huh? if you look back you will find it.

think of all the side affects from modern day medicine that require yet more medical drugs to fix, what a waste. I have already pointed out that there are some very usefull forms of medication that do save alot of lives but compared to the hundreds possibly thousands of drugs that don't they simply do not measure up. The amount of money spent per african per year on medication is less than $100, Compare the USA who spend the most on medicine as a proportion of income and in total it doesnt measure up they spend well over $2000.

Speaking from a personal point of veiw i do not take medicines much - if at all and when i am suffering from insomnia or the flu or have kicked my foot against something hard i do not pop a couple of asprin, pain is natural and providing the illness is not life threatening why take medicine? You are less likely to learn form your mistakes and more likely to get some sort of sideaffect. The main medical concern of mine at the moment is the state of my teef, caaused by sugary food which is almost immpossible to avoid nowadays. I am glad that there are local anesthetics and other things to cure it but the root cause is sugary food and the growing number of diebetics show that there is a problem with that.

You may take the piss out of my name, it doesnt bother me because in the big wide world i do actually have an unusual name and have been picked on etc... for it. So i am not bothered by it. Lastly, i think it is pathetic that you try to embarress me with big words, but intellectual elitist bstards do it all the time anyway.

the benefits of drugs are limited

19.02.2004 10:04

In the 1950s mothers told their kids to wash their hands when possible, because there were viral infections going about. Now people do not wash their hands as much, because we have modern medicine so when you mess up you are saved by the medicine. Do you know of the 'super bug'? Almost all drugs are usless against it and this bug becomes immune to new drugs all the time. There is no perfect drug that can beat the super bug because soon enough the latest drugs will become usless against it. As someone who has done *some* (i emphasise that) research into the history of medicine i maintain that some drugs are usefull when they are nessasary. When it is a minor alement that is not life threatening it does more harm than good to use pharmacutical drugs.
Most people world wide that die, die from dirty water. If this country did not build huge water treatment facilities in the 1800s then we would drop like flies because of the lack of clean water. Are you honestly saying that clean water is not the best and most far reaching medical development ever?
