the day before the scottish mirror ran an editorial calling for the abolition of the unfair tory council tax, tommy sheridan of the ssp launched his party's new Scrap the Council Tax campaign.

he said, "We are trying to inspire a rebellion, and in the course of starting a rebellion every tactic will be examined. We don't go into non-payment campaigns lightly. We know you have to see those things through to the end.

"So we are not yet ready to announce a mass non-payment campaign, but something has to be done [about the tax] or else there may be no alternative.

"That option is on the table and has been discussed and will continue to be discussed."

Besides the SSP, the Greens, SNP and Liberal Democrats are all in favour of such a tax, although they differ on its precise form. Add to that now the Mirror and perhaps the Herald, and Jack McConnell faces strong and far reaching opposition.

However, all these party's have different ideas on how best to recoup the money. The trashy tabloid the Scottish Mirror says "we call on those opposing the council tax to bury the hatchet and unite on one thing - scrapping it.
Backroom bickering on what to replace it with can come later.
For now - just get rid of it and give Scotland's pensioners and low paid a break"

the ssp plans include a demonstration against the council tax in glasgow on april 24th.
