Shame on Higland Council

18.02.2004 01:05

I have just read in the papers that Highland Council intends to seriously damage freedom of speech.

They are planning to charge Scottish Coalition for Justice Not War several 100s of pounds for "road closure".

I think this is silly, stupid & ridiculous & it shows that Highland Council are equally paranoid as Tony Blair.

Just the idea is a shame; it is an insult, and it is absolutely disgusting.

Highland Council are seriously damaging democracy & the international image of Scotland.

Complain on their website !

COUNCIL DROP PLANS TO CHARGE FOR PROTEST

21.02.2004 20:15

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FROM SCOTTISH COALITION FOR JUSTICE NOT WAR
Protest at Labour Conference Inverness 28 February
The Highland Coalition for Justice not War along with their parent body the Scottish Coalition are organising a march and rally outside the Scottish Labour Conference which is taking place in Inverness on Saturday 28 February.

Isobel Lindsay, chair of the Scottish Coalition for Justice not War said:
"Those of us who opposed the war from the start accept that it is not enough to be proved right. The British government must be called to account, not only for the lies which made it possible, but for the actual outcomes. In particular they are responsible for the deaths of up to 20,000 people, including around 8,000 innocent civilians. If the people of Scotland, if elected representatives, if members of the Scottish Labour party let them away with this, then we will be complicit."

Highland Council had proposed imposing a charge on the organisers. HOWEVER THIS HAS NOW BEEN WITHDRAWN

Isobel Lindsay added:
"We are glad that Highland Council has decided not to charge for road closures."

Peace activists from across Scotland will assemble in Bught Park, Inverness at 1 pm, then march past the Conference Centre at Eden Court and through the city centre. They will then return to Bught Park for a rally at 3 pm.
Speakers at the rally will include Elaine Smith MSP (Labour), Rob Gibson MSP (SNP), Eleanor Scott MSP (Greens) and an MSP from the Scottish Socialist Party.

The recent news that the Government will drop the case against GCHQ whistleblower Katherine Gun is just one more sign that they are still frantically trying to cover their tracks over the lies that supported the war. Ms Gun had exposed the bugging of the UN by US intelligence.
