Arooga! Help needed now - Ancient Woodland being felled

anarchoteapot | 04.02.2004 11:09 | Ecology | Free Spaces

Ancient Woodland is being felled NOW outside Blackwood, nr Cardiff, Cymru, to make an access road for an MoD site. The onfo below sent by someone on site. Chainsaws active NOW.

Urgent!
People needed to stop work on the "Blackwood Bypass" near Caerphilly. The site is accessible from the town centre of Blackwood where amazing ancient woodland is being cut down NOW for a two mile feeder road to an expanding MOD site (building hi tech bits for bombers etc).
Work has been stopped by a few people getting in the way of two or three chainsaws for several days running despite heavy rain. Only scrub has been cleared so far and if we move quickly we can slow/stop work down and build up defences quicker than they can trash the place. A camp is in the process of being set up to support people arriving to get in the way of our old enemies Carillion (the arseholes formerly known as Tarmac) and Costain. Resources are on the way but this needs support now.
Strong local support- this road is blasting through amazing woodland and right up against residential areas. Road was contested at public inquiry and has been campaigned against for ten years- currently awaiting verdict for European Court appeal- unsure of grounds but probably to do with SSSI status and two bat habitats on route. This is the usual sickening story: the trashing of yet another beautiful place, the ignoring of all existing environmental legislation and the environmental and social and even economic evidence about how destructive and counter- productive roads are on all levels.
The links from road building, via our oil- fuelled capitalist economy, to war and climate change are made even clearer by the fact that this road is being built for MOD expansion, to help our glorious leaders win the war on terror by bombing the crap out of the middle east- Argh! The proposed road (PFI) is costing the Welsh Taxpayer 56 million pounds (28 million per mile) and is a prime example of the sustainable development Wales has a constitutional commitment to- not!!!!!!!
Come on dust off your waterproofs and polish your harness, we know nine ladies needs ya too!

This place is so easy to get to, it is just a 15 minute walk from Blackwood bus station!!
Head towards ASDA. The site is in the woods on the other side of the valley across from ASDA. If you stand in the ASDA carpark, look across and you will probably hear the chainsaws! PLEASE GO THERE NOW. Its easy accessibility means it is perfect even for people who can only spare one day. Just get off your arse and go!!

More help needed to protect ancient woodland from PFI greed

Resistance to the felling of 1,000yr old trees at Blackwood in South Wales continues today. Costain have finally noticed that people are standing in their way and have sent in more security, although apparently their position has been complicated by treating the local police in such an off-hand manner that the police have left them to get on with the job by themselves.

A camp in now in place, under Section 6, while other individuals are travelling there everyday to protect the woodland. Our man on the spot reported yesterday (Wed) that:

"HELP! A lot more trees felled today, security has
been brought in about 15 of them, and a few of them
are using a bit more than reasonable force. 4 camping
up there, under section 6, so they're unable to leave
their camp to stop them cutting. People urgently
needed as early as possible tomorrow."

Call 07708 420446 or 07952 774525 for details of location & protest.

Please try to get there as soon as possible, every minute lost is an minute gained for the pillagers of our environment!

Location: (from Blackwood town)
"Find Argos on the main shopping street and opposite it you'll see a
Cancer Research shop & Amusement Center, go straight down the steps
past these until you get to the bottom where you'll see a Masonic
Hall on the left. Go left and just at the side of the building next
to the Masonic Hall is a gully & more steps leading down to a river
bridge. As soon as you are over the bridge take the track on the
river bank through the wood, which is also on the left. You will see
Carl the Warden's house at the side of this track. He is one of the
main people behind the campaign & will help protesters. The track
where the trees have so far been cut is above his place in the
woodland and this leads to an access road used by the contractors and
their compound which they have erected.

BTW buses from Cardiff are £3.25 return which is very reasonable, and
they run at about half past the hour all afternoon."

Here are the lies that Capita are using to justify the destruction of an ancient woodland and habitat for endangered species, in the face of an 11-yr campaign by local people to stop this road:

As if all this wasn't bad enough, the road is being built to facilate access to an MoD contracted factory. Christ!
