Animal rights activists who protested outside an exclusion zone enforced by the police on behalf of Asahi Glass Fluoropolymers Limited were subjected to harrassment and photographing by individuals in plain clothes who claimed to be police officers but refused to show any form of identification. When pressed on the subject one 'officer' became agitated and briefly stormed away only to return with a bailiff, described as his colleague' who began issuing injunctions.
When uniformed officers arrived one man was arrested for using a megaphone and was forcibly removed to a waiting police van and taken away. Officers refused to state where the arrested man had been taken. Other officers manhandled two women as they tried to recover the megaphone.
When pressed on the subject of civil liberties one uniformed officer made suggestions that the protesters present had been involved in a campaign of violence and intimidation against employees of Asahi Glass Fluoropolymers Limited. When asked to substatiate his claims he refused to comment.
