Repression in Landquart, Switzerland, when travelling to WEF protests

imc translation | 25.01.2004 19:18 | Repression | World

After the demonstration in Coire, the demonstrators have been blocked at Landquart. There is violent repression going on.

Today, Saturday, January 24th 2004, at 18.00h, demonstrators coming back from the Coire demo are being confronted with heavy repression.

The demonstration had gathered about 3000 people to protest against the WEF. On the way back form the demo, the train stopped in Landquart. The police attacked the demonstrators on the train, several witnesses said they shot teargas grenades into the carriages.

To be able to organize better, the demonstrators blocked the trains by standing in front of the engines.

The police used concussion grenades, rubber bullets, water canons, teargas and pepperspray.
Several hundreds of demonstrators have been surrounded by police from Geneva and Zurich but there is also Austrian and German police present. They want to check the identities of all demonstrators, even if the demonstration in Coire was authorized. As soon as a demonstrator dares to lift a finger he/she is “fired” upon by the water canons. The police is also attempting to remove all journalists from the group, so they can increase the repression without any witnesses....
A number of people has already been badly beaten up by police people.

There is also a group of demonstrators that is blocked in Davos.
We know about a number of arrests in Coire as well

The violence against the protesters is typical for the logic of state repression, logic that was put in place during the G8 protests. All demonstrations against any aspect of the globalisation is met with heavy repression and part of the movement gets criminalized. The right to protest is being stripped of all its meaning.

We cannot let ourselves be dominated by a few global leaders! Resist.
