A few national newspapers have today been carrying the story of the racist killing of a white lad in south-east London. It has not the attracted the full media coverage that such a murder usually merits and one tabloid newspaper is using very strange language to describe a possible reason behind the murder.
In essence a white teenage lad, Terry Gregory died as a result of being stabbed through the heart after coming to the assistance of his friend in a dispute at a bus stop in the Woolwich area of the capital in the early hours of Sunday morning (28th).
Detectives believe the killer first attacked Mr Nelson, 19, in a dispute over an umbrella, and Mr Gregory stepped in to support his friend. It has been reported that a group comprising a black male and three black females boarded the bus when a scuffle broke out.
A group of white men in a black BMW then got out of their car and broke up the brawl. They have since come forward to speak to police.
After the scuffle Mr Gregory, a keen footballer with 12 GCSEs, began walking home with his girlfriend and his friend.
They were walking in the same direction as the bus and half a mile down the road they were confronted by the black man, who stabbed Mr Nelson in the hand.
Mr Gregory was then stabbed repeatedly in front of his girlfriend and died from knife wounds to the heart.
The "Daily Mirror" reports that detectives believe their attacker may have felt "humiliated" during the row over the umbrella.
Fortunately Police have arrested the alleged killer. He is described by Police as 37-year-old black male from Woolwich. He was arrested last night and is being questioned at a south London police station.
Terry's distraught mother Sue, 46, told reporters : "Terry intervened because he was much bigger than his friend and knew his pal needed his help."
Mr. Gregory was employed as a lifeguard at Eltham Leisure Centre and just three months ago saved the life of a little boy.
She added "I can't believe my son died over an umbrella. It's so trivial. I feel as if my stomach has been ripped out."
