Turin Samba player found not guilty!

The case against the samba player from Turin, who had been accused of three counts of
assaulting a police officer, was dropped today due to police ineptitude. The police
officer who had brought the case against the activist had typed the wrong date in his
memo (6/2/2004 rather than 6/1/2004), and so none of the police witnesses turned up!
Quite rightly, the presiding magistrate rebuked the police for gross incompetence, and
when it was pointed out that the defendant and several witnesses had come from Italy for
the trial (as well as UK witnesses having travelled from Edinburgh and Northern England),
he dropped all three charges and abandoned the case.

There is no doubt that the large number of defence witnesses helped convince the
magistrate (who was already visibly annoyed at police incompetence, which he must get
a lot of) that the case should be dropped. Solidarity is our weapon!

Whoops...should have added that this was the trial that emerged out of the protest
against the DSEI delegates dinner at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, on September 11th 2003.
The police attacked the samba band, and then accused one member of the band of assaulting
them. Investigations into police conduct at DSEI continue.

Police failed to show again

Same thing happened to me. The police failed to turn up and the charge (Obstruction of the Highway) was dropped. It looks deliberate to me. In both cases the police case co-ordinator was present making excuses. As far as I know no-one has faced serious consequences as a result of DSEI arrests.

12 more face obstruction charges on Jan 22 at Stratford Magistrates Court.

Thatś really brilliant news, I so pleased.. nice to see a magistrate doing their job properly for once, rather than penalising you for having a brain or being hit by a copper. Very much love to Francesco.. hope you come back and visit us again without shuddering at the thought of returning!

Also well done to Deacon Dave. Wee got some pretty good Dsei court results all round considering.

It is always good to see a fellow marching band-isto relaeased. I always find it hard to believe that the police are silly enough to attack people who obviosely cannot fight back do to heavy instruments.
