Putting the Columbia back in BC


In what may shape up to be the most spectacular scandal to ever rock a BC government, the RCMP and Victoria city police
raided two ministerial offices at the BC Legislature on Sunday.
The details of this story are still very sketchy but it appears that part of a 20 month cross border drug smuggling investigation
led Victoria city police to stage a Sunday afternoon raid on Finance and Transportation Ministries at the BC Legislature.
While the drug investigation is said to focus on the trade of BC marijuanna for cocaine and heroin, the RCMP have stated that
evidence uncovered in the drug investigation provided evidence of commercial criminal activity in other matters. This in turn
has led to speculation of improprieties in the sale of BC Rail and other privitization projects. Probe prompts questions about

The police seized over 30 boxes of documents from the offices of David Basi, a ministerial assistant to Finance Minister Gary
(the ferral) Collins, and Robert Virk, a ministerial assistant to Transportation Minister Judith Reid. Both have worked extensivily
on the privitization of public assets in BC. They are also both deeply associated with the Paul Martin campaign.
Virk has been suspended from his duties while Basi has been fired from the Finance ministry. Both have proclaimed their
intention to cooperate with police inquiries.
The police were busy across BC this weekend, seeking documents from Education Minister Christy Clark's husband, Mark
Marissen and other high ranking liberal party members. Marissen has led the Martin shadow campaign for almost ten years and
is one of the most highly active members of the Federal Liberals in BC. Also raided was the offices of Pilothouse Public Affairs,
a corporate lobby group often associated with companies purchasing public assets.
The depth of this scandal won't be known for months but, in a nutshell it looks like several folks got rich trading buds for coke
and those people have connections within the BC Liberal government and, now within the Federal government. No charges
have been laid at this point. This is so BC.
