Ugliness demeans us all

steve | 25.12.2003 01:02 | Sheffield

If you're this ugly you should spend a few grand to sort it out - if not for yourself then for the rest of society. That's the message from Sky TV this Christmas.

Are you this ugly?
Are you this ugly?

F*&k 'em
F*&k 'em

Capitalism demeans us all
Capitalism demeans us all

These shite billboards were spotted in Sheffield yesterday. They're apparently advertising a TV drama but most motorists probably won't see the small print at the bottom and instead just catch the main headline. No doubt these ads were meant to be controversial - by getting people talking they spread their publicity by word of mouth. But whatever they intended the main message is pretty clear: get surgery.

Anyway lots of scope for subvertising here. These ones are on the ring road down from the Uni roundabout towards Hillsborough though no doubt there are others about.

Advertising demeans us all

F*&k christmas

Merry resistmas

Actually...

this could be an ironic subvert in of itself. it depends what message the programme is going to present. maybe that's the point?

irony?

I take your point but whatever message the TV programme gives out most people will never see it and never know what that is. The only message most of us will get is the headline - it would be hard to even see the bit about TV if, like most people on the ring road, you're in a car.

Then you'll quickly forget about it and it will added to your subconcious store of information that may affect your decisions and thought processes without you even knowing.

So regardless of the intent of the ad I think this is a particularly harmful message to have broadcast into our community.

Really ?

Do you really think people are that stupid ?

Are you really saying that although clever old you was able to spot that this was a TV advert the average person is not as clever so therefore won't be able too !!

Get real, it's obviously a TV / Film / Cosmetic advert, 99% of people will see that straight away and take from either a "I will watch that" or a "I won't watch that" message.

Facially challenged?

Typical, the media cant bring itself to use a genuine case of ugliness(whatever that is) to potray ugliness. maybe they should have used my big nosed monobrowed face for the ad:p

Complain!

In an age where a young teenage girl was found hanged in her bedroom on Christmas day - which may be because she was bullied....

Shouldn't we be more careful about the messages we allow into our society? Not everyone who will see it will have the confidence to see irony.

It's just not appropriate and it saddens me.

What ??

How can you link the suicide of a girl who may or may not have been bullied to this advert ? You are making way too many links.

This advert is obvious. anyone who takes away some sort of subtle "influence" away from it should probably not be allowed out without a handler.

We attribute far, far too much influence to adverts of this type.

I don't think there's any question that junk like this, whether motivated by capitalist profiteering or hatred of women (maybe one is a metaphor for the other) adversely affects girl's self-esteem. Advertising affects our beliefs, that's why they do it.
