Anne O'Rourke, an Australian human rights activist and research fellow who specializes in international trade issues spoke at Historic First African Baptist Church in Savannah on Wed, December 17, 2003, as an educational prep for the June 8, 2004 G8 Free Speech Actions in Savannah.

Two plainclothes cops were in the audience to scope and disorganize. Detectives N.S. Kenny and Bruce Watkins (allegedly of the Savannah Police Department) spent an evening of mugging and otherwise intimidating the audience, after they were exposed by veteran Savannah activist Victor Meresky. Meresky demanded that from now on all attendees of Savannah G8 public and internal events wear name-tags, with the identities of their organizational affiliations clearly stated.

Victor Meresky is an early Viet Nam Era Veteran who has no trouble putting the peddle to the metal. Our elder folk are pure gold in Savannah. Our progressive elders should be cherished everywhere.

The following letter was sent to Dr. Otis Johnson, the new Mayor of Savannah and constitutional boss of the SPD yesterday:

Dear Mayor-Elect Johnson:

Thank you for staying ahead of the plans for the upcoming G8 Summit. Hopefully, you can attend the Organizing Committee Meeting on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003 at the Main Library, Bull Street.

I am writing to express my concern about the police attendance at our meetings
at First African Baptist Church. There are plainclothes detectives that attend
these meetings, make 'mean' faces at that people that attend, and serve to intimidate the public. We do not want these officers around and generally
speaking we oppose all forms of COINTELPRO, the monitoring of political,
religious, social and civic organizations that are not suspected of criminal
activity. We are aware of the history of police intimidation at Black Churches.
We do not think the police should be targeting the First African Baptist Church audiences.

I would like to warmly welcome the Mayor's Office, City Manager's Office and Aldermen to attend our planning meetings. We would also like to arrange a
meeting between you and members of our group. Please call me at your convenience.

With warm regards,

Kellie Gasink
