January 8th 2004
Stand Up for Asylum Seekers

On January 8th, it will be one year since the infamous Sections 55 & 57 of the Immigration & Nationality Act came into effect. It has created untold misery. Government policy, far from drawing back from this inhumanity, has become more and more extreme. Families with children will also now be made destitute, and those children may also be taken away from their parents. Blunkett proposes to reduce Legal Aid to Asylum Seekers to a meaningless level, and to screen Asylum Seekers for HIV/AIDS, TB, and other diseases in order to stop sick people entering the UK.

Towns and cities across the country will mark January 8th with protests in many forms. We would like a simple and unifying action linking all of these. Quite simply, we would ask you, at twelve noon, on the 8th of January, wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, to stand up, and remain standing for two minutes. Print posters and t-shirts and wear badges, saying ‘I’m Standing Up For Asylum Seekers’. Make sure that your action is well publicised and that you let us know you are involved so that we can mention your participation in press statements.

If you are able to print badges or leaflets, provide or print tee-shirts or help in any other practical way, please get in touch. LCADAS is not linked to any political organisation and has no resources.

The more high-profile people we can get involved, the more successful the action will be, so write to your MP and your MEP, your favourite band or performer, church leaders, all kinds of public figures, and get them involved. Please do e-mail us with the name of a contact and your e-mail address so we can send you updates. Let us know that you are joining the action, and who else you have got involved. Please, please join us and let us know you have.
