Tru Rez Crew
I'm A Lucky One

The video for "I'm A Lucky One" was shot entirely on the Six Nations of the Grand River Indian Reservation one hour south of Toronto. The song is about being thankful for your family and friends, and about making the right decisions in life. It's about looking towards the future and trying hard to succeed no matter the circumstances. "Even though we may have grown up poor on the rez we can still succeed if we try..." -Jonathan Garlow, Producer of Tru Rez Crew. The clip was directed by Randy Redroad, and was produced by PJ Thornton. The production company, Big Soul Productions, is an aboriginally owned company based in Toronto.

What does it mean to 'succeed'. To join the corporate capitalist system? To be a music star? Do you need to be rich? Is this just an advert? Another niche market? We are people first.

fuck the cult of personality

Pop music & Lonely Planet books are the new colonialism.

try to understand

People who know the Rez understand the message.
Rising above it means getting off the booze.
It's about being good to your kids. Many kids
have a rough time with parents and uncles.
The visuals are true to life.
Many people dwell on the fact that the
country has been stolen by Europeans.
It seems easier just to drink sometimes.
There is a tendancy to level down. But people
have to level up. If someone gets a job don't
get them so fucked up on glue, gasoline and
booze that they can't make it in to work.
Look to our future. Strive to move forward.
Although you don't look back, don't forget who you
are. The words used, the images used, the snow,
the trees, the dog, the kind elders re-enforce
the reality of the Rez. So the Rez is not deserted.
But transformed.
Peace.
