Just a thought...

Now here's an idea

It was visible from discussions at the ESF and recent events that protests are getting more and more organised which can only be a good thing. Standing up for human rights and other causes is everyones goal. However, im not accepting violence is right at all for peace is what we all stand for but for protection people who seem to end up being confrontational, although sometimes a bit loopey shouldnt they pad themselves up. They could have an army of padded people (cushions and blankets) and make shields out of trays from the kitchen. I dont think a tray or cusions are classed as illegal (altho the police may see them as an offensive weapon!). That would look so good, 1000 people padded up with trays maybe even banging there trays and walking in lines (almost forgot cycle helmets!! phew!)towards the opposing lines of oppression. Give yourselves names and ranks and practice surrounding people and holding on to each other. That would be very good, funny and rewarding.

Thats good but any chance of seeing that on our shores in the near future. Maybe some of the groups involved in future events should get the ball roling. Eh?

Stop talking, start doing

I'm all up for this idea but would make a couple of comments¨

"They could have an army of padded people (cushions and blankets) and make shields out of trays from the kitchen. I dont think a tray or cusions are classed as illegal (altho the police may see them as an offensive weapon!)."
- Who are "They"? If you like the idea so much (and I agree its worth thinking about for mass actions) then the best idea is surely to start to create a network of friends who are up for it and get the ball rolling yourself. I'm going to be speaking to friends about it soon, to try to raise the issue at the next national meeting about the G8. Other groups in the uk and europe will be up for it I reckon.

And by the way, the cops DO view protective equipment as offensive but don't let that put anyone off.

"Give yourselves names and ranks and practice surrounding people and holding on to each other. That would be very good, funny and rewarding."
- Errr, ranks and all that militaristic jazz went out of fashion ages ago. Not exactly a good idea. Practising charging a police line is worthwhile though.

Crash helmets are cheap if you buy them from dodgy markets. Shin pads are good (cricket pads? maybe a bit heavy). Have a look at the WOMBLES web site (www.wombles.org.uk) for more info on protection.

Great idea, a couple of comments

I'm all up for doing this, but will make a couple of comments:

"They could have an army of padded people (cushions and blankets) and make shields out of
trays from the kitchen. I dont think a tray or cusions are classed as illegal (altho the police may see them as an offensive weapon!)."
- I agree it would be a good idea, but who are "They"? Surely it is a matter of doing this yourself rather than waiting for some group to do this.

Why not bring the issue up at the next meeting about the G8 (I certainly will). Get friends who are interested to start preparations, network the idea with other groups, get more suicidal lunatics on board. If we can get people talking about it now maybe we have a real chance to create soomething impressive - and effective - in time for the G8 in 2005.

"Give yourselves names and ranks and practice surrounding people and holding on to each other."
- Ranks and militarism is soooo 20th century, its really gone out of fashion these days. A little bit of self-discipline and an open mind hould be enough!

I've thought about this type of tactic before and the Wombles have tried it before. They have information on stuff like this on their web site (www.wombles.org.uk) i think.
