Protest hits French nuclear plant

Forty environmental campaigners, including twenty-two British Greenpeace members, have protested on the site of a French nuclear plant, at proposals to expand the facility and supply export markets. Ten wind turbines and a banner reading ?No Nukes ? Go Wind? were set-up at the plant in Penly, Normandy. The activists were all arrested. The French government and energy company EdF plan to build another nuclear reactor at the plant, despite critics claims that the plutonium-fuelled EPR reactor is particularly unsafe and will create damaging waste. Greenpeace campaigner Robin Oakley said: "We've done this because nuclear pollution does not respect borders. Europe is turning its back on nuclear power and has not seen a new plant built for years, but the French government seems determined to put us all at risk with this proposed reactor on the Channel coast. Nuclear plants are extremely vulnerable. Today protesters got in with ease, while catastrophic accident is a constant risk. A disaster at a French plant could prove devastating for the British Isles."
