Reclaim The Bases II weekend, 17/18 January 2004
RTB | 02.12.2003 21:38 | Anti-militarism
After the success of the first Reclaim The Bases weekend on 5/6 April 2003 (for a report see http://www.reclaimthebases.gzzzt.net/press.txt) and the RTB summer camp in August, we are now looking forward to the next Reclaim The Bases weekend of nonviolent action at military bases across the UK.
Not only is the war in Iraq everything but over - the occupation has to be seen as low-intensity warfare - we can also be sure that the military is already preparing for the next wars, wherever they might be. We can witness this at several military bases across the UK:
- new development of "mini-nukes" at AWE Aldermaston (see http://www.reclaimthebases.gzzzt.net/nnews_75.html). These nuclear weapons are no longer seen as a deterrent, but will be seen as nuclear weapons that can actually be used in the "theatre" - the battlefield;
- upgrading of Rapid Deployment Force capacities via new air-refuelling and transport capacities at RAF Brize Norton (see http://www.reclaimthebases.gzzzt.net/weekly_1.html);
- and a probably very busy planning unit at the British Permanent Joint Forces Headquarters (PJHQ) in Nortwood (see http://www.reclaimthebases.gzzzt.net/nbases_0.html);
to mention just a few.
While the military is busy preparing for the next war(s), we - the anti-war activists - should not just look back at the war on Iraq, but should turn our attention to these preparations for war. The RTB weekend on 17/18 January is a very good opportunity to confront the military with our preparations to resist war - at a military base near you. Unfortunately, so far only one event has been confirmed: on 17 January at Northwood (see http://www.reclaimthebases.gzzzt.net/events.html#e_8).
But there is still time to organise an action, a vigil, a demonstration, or whatever you think is appropriate. You can check www.reclaimthebases.org.uk for information on many military bases. If "your" base is not included, then send us your information on the base.
Please let us know soon what you are planning for RTB II - 17/18 January 2004. Email us at email@reclaimthebases.org.uk.
