NO MOOR MINES

Only a pretty warped mind would consider putting an
opencast mind at the source of 3 of the regions
rivers! The Calder, Irwell and Aire all flow from
Heald Moor on the Lancs/Yorkshire border above
Todmorden and theyre polluted and silted enough
already thanks very much. Unfortunatly this ludicrous
plan is back in a planning enquiry, happening this
week in Burnley, as the company are appealling the
last decision which they lost.

HRM Resources want coal and clay from our hills but
they probably wont want to deal with the side effects.
These include increased risk of flooding due to
messing with water tables, increased soil erosion,
increased traffic with all its attendant pollution,
noise and saftey effects, and increased difficulty for
the poor ecology up there, gamely trying to hang on in
tricky conditions.
Every previous mine there has resulted in landslides,
and given the climate chaos we,re experiencing its
hardly sensible to be mining for more coal these days.
The planning enquiry is pretty tedious, as they don’t
even consider whether the whole thing is a good idea
but just argue over lorry numbers, but its on till Wed
3rd. The result should be in by mid January.
Treesponsibility , the local reforestation project,
is putting forward a proposal to actually restore the
moor to an ecological wonderland, and if we ever get
to do that, we’ll need all the help we can get.
In the meantime. look out for more news and tell the
company what you think of their crazy money hungry
schemes.
