Muslims in Europe 'danger to Jews'

Ariel Sharon redefines Israel's attitudes

In a recent interview,

Israeli premier Ariel Sharon has officially declared Muslims in Europe a danger to Jews. Quote: "An ever stronger Muslim presence in Europe, is certainly endangering the life of Jewish people."

Sharon also restates the claim that there is no difference between anti-semitism and criticism of Israel, quote: "Today there is no separation. We are talking about collective anti-Semitism. The state of Israel is the Jewish state and the attitude towards Israel runs accordingly."

Although it is ignored by the media, there has been an important shift in Jewish attitudes, both in Israel and outside it. For centuries, Islam was not important in defining Jewish identity. Increasingly, hostility to Islam is becoming a defining element in Jewish identity. Muslims have become a sort of 'natural enemy' for Jews and for the State of Israel.

Israel, and a large number of Jews in Europe itself, are simply not prepared to accept the presence of Muslims in Europe. Although Sharon did not demand that the Muslims be expelled from Europe, that is the logical consequence of his attitude. It is obvious that this underlying attitude will push the European Jewish communities into political alliances with the anti-immigrant right. That is already visible in Flanders and Italy.

Proof if it were needed that in the addled mind of Sharon and the Likudniks, Jews in Europe are little more than lobby fodder for Israel's state interests. But we ain't that dumb, are we? The racist Right would love nothing more than setting Jew against Muslim; divide and conquer, remember? Unity has been the key to anti-racism and anti-fascism for fifty years. Now is a bad time to turn stupid...

I don't agree that hostility to Muslims defines identity for contemporary jewish people- how do you explain the large numbers of jewish activist present in the social justice movements in palestine and globally

maybe for a powerful reactionary few like in Isreal- but I think you could say the same for powerful reactionary christain groups in north america and europe- i mean look at the islamophobia of the Italian state- and so Sharon cosy's up to Mussolini's heir- ugghh / yuk

but that's just them nutters, it's not all the people all the time
there are lots of us of all religious faiths and none who desire to communicate
not dominate- so we walk together
and what we do-

it's not Kurious' tired leftist slogans
that move us
but the rhythms of our hearts
in love and struggle
our class is mongrel
our power is multiplied
our world the world of the many
noborders no nations
one love x x x

Why, renegado, are you bothering to diss kurious when you ultimately end up agreeing with him/her?

Rather undercuts all your stirring stuff about unity, dunnit?
