Is this just entertainment? Or are we in front of an original, fresher way to communicate a political message?
The crowd which walked by the OSAN action taking place on wednesday 19th on Cornmarket Street was amused by a brief but intense piece of street theater. At the beginning of Bush official state's visit to the UK , the oxford student activists chose to express their welcome through wit, not loudness or disorder necessarily, letting the powerful sounds of the shortcomings of Bush's administration echo by themselves. The war in Iraq and generally the hawkish attitude of the two allies were the obvious main motive of the satire. Dead bodies lying on the ground constituted the setting on which the two President stipulated their symbolic wedding- an alliance toward world dominance, as the priest said and the two repeated.
A great number of people stopped by to understand what was going on or maybe just to have a innocent laugh, but how powerful a reminder of current political problems was that! On the same evening a march took place through the central streets of the city and ended up exactly on Conrmarket street. That was the usual realm of politics- demonstrations, speeches, flags. While through the irony of a cheaply-organizable street theater something different was going on, a different way for individuals to reach the wider realm of society. New means are needed for the new possible world we want to build. And part of this happened here.
