Burning Planet March report

shef-sambista | 18.11.2003 22:19 | Bush 2003 | Anti-militarism | London | Sheffield

A large crowd of people took part in the Burning Planet march against Bush tonight leaving Lincoln's Inn Fields at about 7.30 pm.

The procession included many lanterns and a large illuminated globe with music from a large samba band including players from London, Sheffield and Amsterdam. The route was allowed to include Oxford Street where there was a lot of support from passers by and a great deal of media attention.

Policing appeared to be light, even sympathetic. In informal conversations police said that Bush's publicly declared itinerary should not be believed. Police officers also talked about concern over American security forces being in London. One officer was angry in the knowledge that street crime would be on the increase in his home patch this week as it would be well known all police would be tied up in central London.

The march ended close to the American Embassy where speakers included MP Michael Meacher.
