suspicion after squat fire

n | 25.10.2003 19:45 | Anti-militarism | London

The XL squat in Londons commercial road has burnt down (sometime Saturday afternoon). It was a full on massive fire with a good half dozen or more fire engines in attendance. No one appears to be injured. There were only four people in the building (everyone else at the anarchist bookfair?).

Candle fire, dodgy electrics? Or something else?....

The squatted listed building on commerical road would be worth a fortune for development but as a derelict listed building it's owners were unable to capitalise on it's potential value. When the suatters moved in they found major water leaks damaging the building and informed the owner who seemed none to pleased to be preached to about building stewardship.

But now the owner need not worry. The building has gone up in flames and no doubt the insurance will be gratefully received - as to will the be the opportunity to develop the site now that the listed building is not an issue. Kind of handy that squatters burned the place down isn't it?

One problem with that idea. The fire started on the ground floor which was not being used. This proves nothing of obviously, but it has certainly given those who lived there something to think about.
