Eye witness report from Roma

04.10.2003 19:12

Numbers wise there were maybe 20,000 people. The march was entirely peaceful for much of the time until a staged confrontation between the 'disobediants' and the police in front of the congress building where the meetings were happening.

Needless to say, the police gave the disobediants a beating (video to follow for you riot porn freaks) and innocent people got hurt while those lobbing stuff ran away. Tear gas was used. Fireworks went off in police lines and it was a generally predicatable day.

I have lots of 'good' footage of police violence and the normal 'riot' shit but I am not sure I can be arsed to do anything with it.

Sounds like the more interesting stuff happened in the morning but we were too late to get to the blockades. There were reports of a building on fire on Radio Rossa but I can't confirm (don't even speak italian). (report of 30 - 40 arrests as a result of these morning actions).

Tired and hungry now..

good night

(update: Numbers claimed for march seem to range from 40,000 - 70,000 people but there was apparently also some other union based demo somewhere else in the city which the organisers claim to have been attended by 200,000. Lots of arguments between various groups and the disobedienti have emerged.)

I like the way italy imc has a photo with every feature.

I also like the way google-news picks up italy indymedia.
