Employment rights march targets EU summit

Workers from the UK are joining a march in Rome to urge European governments to keep employment rights at the heart of the new EU Constitution.

The demonstration, organised by the European TUC, is aimed at persuading political leaders that social issues should be at the core of the constitution.

Unions are pressing for good quality jobs, a decent standard of living and secure pensions for workers across Europe.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "Unions are concerned that some European governments seem to be moving away from the ideals of a social Europe towards one more concerned with the interests of big business.

"What goes into the new constitution is of paramount importance as it will form the basis of future laws which will have a big impact on the lives of workers and their families across Europe."

The new constitution is being discussed at the EU summit in Rome this weekend.
