How to Paralyse a Campaign, in Five Easy Steps

MI5 | 02.10.2003 16:06

Step 1 - Join the campaign; talk loudly about the need for unity, diversity and democracy.

Step 2 - When action is proposed, insist it must be delayed until the whole purpose and strategy of the campaign has been re-debated from scratch to your satisfaction.

Step 3 - If the campaign organisers refuse or object, point out that they are denying democratic debate.

Step 4 - Develop this into a general critique of the leadership, their intolerance of dissent and contempt for democracy.

Step 5 - Build an internal opposition within the campaign whose primary activity is attacking the leadership.

(Warning: Following Step 5 it's tempting to lead an actual organisational split from the campaign. But only do this if at least a third of the members will come with you! Otherwise you'll do more damage staying inside.)
