Sheffield Incinerator Protest
Chris | 28.09.2003 14:12 | Ecology | Health | Sheffield
A protest is planned in Sheffield at 5pm on Monday 29th September at Bernard Road Incinerator to protest against the start of the building of new facilities.
This has been posted to several Sheffield email lists (all of which have closed archives for some reasons I don't understand) so I'm posting it here to make it public.
Incinerator Protest / Wake
Monday 29th September, 5.00pm Bernard Road Incinerat
Onyx will be 'cutting the first sod' for the new incinerator plant(or in their corporate newspeak, an energy recovery facility! ) at Bernard Road and having a formal 'celebration', However, many community groups: Impact, Rabid, The Green Party etc, will be on hand to peacefully spoil the party for this unwanted monsterosity and have a wake for the incinerator instead, it should be fun...
An Invitation to all Sheffield residents who are opposed to the building of a new incinerator in the City. If you haven't been invited to the formal "cutting the 1st sod" ceremony on Monday 29th September at Bernard Road, why not join in the "unofficial" wake outside the gates at 5.00pm. Bring bells, whistles, loud hailers, musical instruments; anything that makes a noise and home made banners. Unfortunately the budget won't run to champers and sausage rolls!

Bernard Road Incinerator, Sheffield (Energy from Waste Plant)

Send it to another town - someone elses backyard?
Landfill?? Whose holes in the ground? Groundwater pollution? Methane and gas emissions from decomposition?
Yes, reuse. Yes, recycle. Yes, reduce consumption. Yes, let's be environmentally aware of our impacts.
But waste is still being produced - THIS DECADE.
Sheffield's own citizens produce waste, so treat it in/near Sheffield.
Should we stop refuse collections in Sheffield?
Are we to dump waste under hedges, into ditches, streams and rivers?
Let's get a sense of reality.
The new incinerator will have sophisticated flue gas treatment to the latest EU standards, and recovery of energy. This is the best bet.
There many other incinerators around that no-one even mentions. eg. near Meadowhall/M1.
