They MAY be experimentally spraying stuff into the plane's exhaust. But what your are SEEING are ordinary "contrails" (and I'll explain about them later). The reason why I say that is IF they are spraying ithey are trying to SUPPRESS the formation of a contrail -- because leaving a nice big easily visable contrail defeats "stealth" technology.

OK now, contrails. Water vapor is transparent (invisable) but water droplets and ice crystals are not. You cannot see steam, the white cloud you see is when water vaopr condenses into droplets (or forms ice crystals depending upon temperature). That's what clouds are. All sorts of clouds, but here in particualr think "cirrus" clouds because they are closely related to contrails.

The point is, just because the temperature aloft is "right" for water vapor to condense into droplets or ice crystals it can't immediately do so without "seeds". The plane flying through does a number of things. The burned fuel is mainly hot water and carbod dioxide but also some particulate material. The plane sheds particulate material from its paint and metal skin (EVENTUALLY it wears away). And there are sharp temperature changes in the pressure changes in the votices shed off the lifting surfaces (I'm NOT going to go into airfoil theory, just take my word that there are "tip vortices").

As that hot exhaust mixes with the cold air aloft and rapidly cools, all that extra water condenses because in THIS case the particulate matter serves as "seeds". You get a trail from the exhaust and maybe the wingtips. If the conditions aloft are such that the air is not close to saturation, if it is willing to "hold" more water vapor, the trail rapidly dissipates as the droplets evaporate. But if it's close to saturation, the trail is persistant and stretches long behind the plane lasting many minutes. And is the weather aloft is just right, over saturated, all that's missing for the water to condense into droplets being "seeds" -- why then the trail can grow into a cloud (type cirrus to be precise) and can maybe even spread across the sky. WOULD HAVE HAPPENED EVENTUALLY (cirrus clouds DO form without contrails triggering them). It's just that all those water droplets in the plane's exhaust served as seeds for the further condensation NOW.
