PLEASE Increase the fonts size on UK Indymedia

Kate | 06.09.2003 12:54 | Indymedia | London

This site is very difficult to read for any length of time for visually impaired people--it causes eye-strain within a few minutes.

The site is constructed in such a way that prevents browsers from increasing text size. Why? Why? Why?

See the following site for ways to improve UK IMC visually.

 http://www.mardiros.net/design-guidelines.html

in particular please note the following:

"For the visually impaired it is important for them to be able to increase font size for easier reading. Nearly all browsers have an option to increase text size but only if the web page is designed to allow it. Often designers specify the size of fonts in pixels instead of points or ems. This causes the font size to be fixed and can cause a lot of partially sighted people to leave the site rather than put extra pressure on their sight and read the content."

The Sheffield IMC site is much better:

assuming you are using microsoft IE, clik on edit- view - text size. change the font size to 'large' or 'largest'. Other Internet browsers have similar features.

hope this is of some help.

The "text zoom" in Mozilla works though

If you download Mozilla ( http://www.mozilla.org) the text zoom facility on the works fine on Indymedia.

font size should be browser controlled

I asked the same question when the new site was originally deployed and received no reply.

I'm no html expert but suspect it is hard coded into a style sheet. When this site loads an article I get a flash of it in "largest" font size (my EI is set to largest) and then something overrides this and the article re-appears in "smallest"

This should not be a big deal to fix. Surely one of the great volunteers with html knowledge could take this issue on and make this site more accessable.

mozilla firebird is even better

than mozilla that is, and the text zoom works fine on that as well.

This will get fixed sometime...

Sadly nobody can afford to work full time on Indymedia and no one gets paid for doing stuff anf this means that stuff that is broken (and I agree that having fonts in fixed px sizes _is_ broken) takes time to fix cos we are all busy people...

Hopefully we will be able to fix this soon... in the mean time Mozilla done allow you to scale the fonts:
