22/08/2003- Since last night the Israeli army has been attacking Jenin, a part of its collective punishment of Occupied Palestine. Last night the tanks came rolling into the Old City of Jenin, along with special forces units in civilian cars. Houses were shot at and flares fired for most of the night. In the morning the attack continued and the tanks, hummers and military jeeps remain in the streets.
This is curfew for curfews sake, there is not even the pretence even to be looking for wanted men, no arrests have been made. At least two people have been wounded today. The military is either driving round the streets terrorising aimlessly, or sitting in strategic positions above and below the city and camp. When still they are inviting the children of Jenin to attempt to protect their homes, a futile battle of stones against armour. Each teenager shows me his bullet scars, almost every one has around four on his face, neck, arms and legs. The children of the camp are burning tyres around the camp in an attempt to keep out the army.
It is only just over a year since one of the greatest crimes in recent memory of Israeli military practise was committed in Jenin camp. The continued prescence of the military is an affront to the memory of that tragedy, the people of Jenin camp deserve to have a nights sleep without the fear of death, demolition and arrest.
