The Secretary of State for Transport is poised to sign a stopping up order for a large area of highway in Farnborough town centre.

The Secretary of State for Transport is poised to sign a stopping up order under section 247 of the Town and Country Planning Act (1990) for a large area of highway in Farnborough town centre. You have 28 days in which to object, starting from 8 August 2003.

A highly misleading official Notice has been posted in the town, it simply refers to 'an area of highway at Queensmead'. The actual reality is - northern Queensmead from The Mead to Victoria Road (a very busy pedestrian thoroughfare), the service roads to the east and west of Queensmead, Eastmead and Westmead (essential for servicing the shops), and Firgrove Court (earmarked for demolition for a car park for an unwanted superstore). Those directly affected have not been informed.

Object to the Secretary of State.

Please lodge objections with Phil Crock ford at GOSE, from whom further information may be obtained.

Blocking up of the highways is a further blow to the retail viability and vitality of the town centre. [BVEJ newsletters passim]
