Public Whip (Counting votes on your behalf)

julian | 14.08.2003 09:44 | Analysis | Liverpool

Early release of automatic website which parses the online Hansard for the votes made by the local MPs. This strips out the hot air (speeches) and looks straight at the exercise in power: the votes themselves. There are plenty of surprises. We are looking for advice to make this website useful to the wider community before doing the real publicity.

The Public whip records for this parliament, MPs in the Liverpool area:

Voted in 543 of 657 possible divisions. That's a 82.65% attendance rate.
Rebelled in 7 divisions. That's a 1.29% rebellion rate.

Comments: I live in Liverpool and am funding the development of this open-sourced website in the hope that it can be made into an embarrassment for MPs who are disregarding the wishes of their constituents with impunity.

While I am normally in favour of workers' unions, I think the closed shop Politician's Union (what we call official political parties) in the people's parliament is, as it would be, operating so much against their employer's (the public's) interests, that we have to do everything we can to break it.

We are seeking advice or collaboration to make this website useful to any public organization which, as part of its campaign, says: "Write to your MP." Won't it help to know exactly what your MP is actually doing with your vote?

get known and people will use it. online links to your site on other supportive sites are a start. reviews might also help. getting these shouldn't be difficult because your project looks great. check for many many useful links.

This is brilliant. I've been looking for an MP accountability website for ages. I'm sure it'll prove an excellent source of info, armed with facts and holding MPs accountable by letter, I feel, does have an impact.

One hopeful suggestion, is there any possibility of extending the website to cover Merseyside as I live in St Helens and want to now what Shaun Woodward is doing, supposedly in my name.
