Baer depicts Saudi Arabia as far more culpable than simply being the place where 15 of the 19 Sept. 11 terrorists happened to be born.
Warning: If you're a staunch supporter of President George W. Bush, John Ashcroft and the rest of that pack of relentless anti-terrorists running the country, you'd better pass on this book.
If you don't pass, you can stop wondering what facts are blacked out of the recent Senate Intelligence Committee's report on the 9/11 terrorist attack. Former CIA official Robert Baer's Sleeping With the Devil draws a compelling case against the Saudis and the generations-old greed of U.S. politicians. His Saudi Arabia is a corrupt, scared, ready-to-implode country that has directly and indirectly supported terrorists with oil money for decades.
Baer served throughout the Middle East from 1967 to '97, and speaks Arabic, Farsi, French and German. The biggest admitted problem with Middle East intelligence so far is a lack of Arabic-speaking spooks working the streets. This guy did that.
So if he doesn't know, who does? It's important to know that he submitted his book to the CIA before publication to eliminate national security leaks. (Very little is blacked out in the hardcover.) The best guess is that the CIA green-lighted Baer's book because they're sick to death of taking public whippings as the State Department protects the House of Sa'ud family that runs Saudi Arabia.
"The result is a kingdom built on thievery, one that nurtures terrorism, destroys any possibility of a middle class based on property rights, and promotes slavery and prostitution. We can't get around the fact that the House of Sa'ud underwrites the mosque schools that turn out the jihadists, just as it administers the charities that fund the jihadists."
