Vancouver man killed by police

VANCOUVER - A 36 year-old man is dead after being shot by Vancouver Police inside a home on the city's West Side on Saturday night.

Const. Anne Drennan says the man, who has a history of mental illness, was killed after rushing at police with a knife.

Drennan says officers initially fired two taser darts at the man in an effort to subdue him, but says they had no apparent effect as he even pulled one of them out himself.

"He continued advancing on the police officers and the psychiatric nurse, and when he was dangerously close, one of the police officers fired one shot at point-blank range killing the man instantly."

Drennan says police had been called to the house by members of the man's family.

His name has not been released.
