Protest over city violence

Refugee representatives held a meeting with police in Hull

A group of refugees have held a rally in Hull to protest against the recent attacks in the city.

Up to 150 people took part in the peaceful demonstration in Pearson Park to highlight fears of violence and harassment.

Representatives of the group then met with Humberside Police on Sunday afternoon to discuss the problems in the city.

It follows trouble in the centre of Hull on Friday night when tensions between rival gangs flared up.

Calm appeal

Dashty Jamal, Secretary of the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees UK, said: "We are a peaceful people, we're here to work not to fight.

"There are too many attacks against us in the city."

After Friday night's trouble, race relations officers appealed for calm.

Adil Khan, community and race relations officer for Humberside Police, said: "It is only a minority of people who are causing the problems.

"We are continuing to provide a high level of police resources in the city centre and surrounding areas to ensure public confidence is maintained and any future potential for disorder can be dealt with quickly and firmly."
