Cleaning the poor out of the city centre

David Green | 22.07.2003 08:56 | Indymedia | Repression | Liverpool

I'm I only one of few people watching what is going on in this city?

The nicest areas of Liverpool are being cleansed of the poor.
AS anyone noticed how the whole of the city centre is being yuppified. The so called city of culture and regeneration scam is only benefitting the neo-rich. Thousands of parasites have been decending on the city since over a billion pound came into the city. Yet the avarage income of most local people has actually got worse in the city. the biggest industry for locals is call centres. On the streets of Liverpool we see cars and shops we would never have seen 10 years ago - or at least they would have been damaged - by class conscious locals. What has happend to the resistance. There must be thousands of people out there who can see what is going on. And its getting worse. Flats that use to belong to housing assocations are now going for £100 - 150 thousand, even low proffesionals could not afford these prices.
Anyway this city of culture - we the concerned and caring people of the city need to get together and start challanging this money grabbing scum.
Thats one of my rants.
Well done indymedia Liverpool.

When Glasgow was lauded as the 'City of Culture' the same thing happened - the centre became yuppieville, while the ghettos (worst in Europe) became crackville. We got elaborate shopping malls with designer shops, posh restaurants, wine bars and venues like the new SEC building for elitist functions, but this 'regeneration' didn't reach the poor, who still have less than jack-shit. Glasgow was s-miles better, (slogan) for the select few, who could afford it. I empathise with Liverpool.

Sad Really

Bristol's the same

They are spending £500 MILLION on a shopping centre extension less than 1km from some of the most deprived (and Crack ridden) area's of our city.

Well done boys, that's a GREAT advertisment for the working class!!!!

Just take your misery out on someone who happens to be more fortunate than you, and continue to perpurtuate the myth that all working class people go and vandalise the property of the more fortunate, and rob and steal of them. The Daily Mail loves people like you.

Unfortunate??? Do you think rich people deserve to be rich

In response to the last comment. To me it shows that people have accepted that people who make their money by weeling and dealing and adding absolutely nothing to the betterment of Liverpool or the world are accepted. There is nothing wrong with a bit of class justice. I'm not talking about people who damage ordianry people property - I'm talking about a completely differnt thing - class inequality, crime - and crime that is being committed on people by pen pushing and meetings behind doors ' some people rob you with a fountain pen'. Do you think its ok that some people by the meer fact that they are 'Business heads' should make ten times more money than people who actually do contribute to the world. People do not make lots of money in an honourable way - that is a myth. You make it by ripping off others. We are living in a city were ordianry working class people can no longer afford to buy a house unless its on the outskirts of the city - even low grade proffessionals are unable to afford to buy houses - this is no joke - I think the likely reader of the nazi daily mail is you my friend. Liverpool use to have a proud history of solidarity and resistance - this is real culture. Obediance to the neo rich parasites - is obedience and is promoted in every tabloid in the country and promoted it would seem by your good self.

Whatever...

I happen to support people who have made something of themselves, people who have clawed their way out of poverty, instead of relying on state benefits and petty crime to feed their pathetic existances. I am aware there are people in Britain today who have been deprived of oppotunity, but vandalising the personal property of anybody is only going to turn people against you. I am all for bringing down the corporate elites, but not every middle-class person is going "Oh goody, let's drain the life out of the working class"! They are just going about their lives, not actively exploting anyone.

Come to thing of it, I am not really sure you can distinguish between working and middle class anymore, if anyting the divide is betweeen the corporate elites and they rest of the population, but just smashing windows etc isn't going to solve anything.

Yes, before you all flame me to a cinder, I am a class traitor, corporate whore, sell out, champane socialist, or anything else that you want to call me because I don't conform to your blinkered views. All I say to you is, "Yeah, so f'n what!!!"
