Fairford Camp Report

Monkey Unit | 21.07.2003 13:45 | Anti-militarism | Repression

Fairford Peace Camp Thursday 18 - Mon 21 July 2003
International Air Tattoo

After an initial ding-dong with Glos.police who tried to move us on, we settled down to an excellent and well supported camp, with a constant presence at the main entrance to
the Air Tattoo 200 yards from Gate10 Camp. We were also opposite a camp site of
2,000 Tattoo-goers who all had to pass our friendly and banner-festooned camp with
peace songs wafting into the night.

It seemed to satisfy the police to give us parking tickets for camping on the verge, well
inside the new yellow lines so we incurred £180 fines between us for parking essential
vehicles. We have sent details to our lawyers already dealing with the original road
closure and now these new political yellow lines. Anyone wishing to make a donation to
the parking fines should make cheques to Nukewatch South and send to:

It would be really good if people posting reports of action/events would consider for a moment that some of the readers of the newswire have not been following every thread of the diverse campaign movement and might need a little background about stuff.
Please make it a habbit to avoid asumptions about what people should know about your subject and just add a little more content and explaination to your posts.

Thanks

some background

Fairford, as you may know, was a base for B52 bombers to blast innocent civilians to pulp earlier this year. A continuous protest was set up at gate 10 until those "angels of death" went back to the home of the brave and the land of the free! However, Fairford is being used all the time by the US military and will become the main refuelling base on "airstrip one" while Mildenhall (or is that Lakenheath)gets an upgrade. Fairford is also host to the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT), an unashamedly militaristic glee-fest (come and see our loverly warplanes). Some of those involved in the anti-war protests of earlier this year are continuing their objections - see Fairford Peacewatch. It's on the web somewhere.
