The latest Shortwave Report (July 18) is up at the website http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality (13.2MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.2MB) (29:00) It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.

This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, China Radio International, the Voice of Russia, Radio Deutsche Welle, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From Netherlands- In Peru, the Shining Path rebel group has been battling with government forces. The former dictator of Guatemala has been given permission by a court to run in an upcoming presidential election- human rights activists worry that he will never be brought to trial for massacring thousands of indigenous Mayans. In Columbia, the right-wing paramilitaries have made a pact with President Uribe, who has relocated his headquarters to one of the most war-torn areas.
From China- At the 2nd International AIDS Conference being held in Paris, an appeal has been made to allow poor nations to produce their own medications. Prior to Tony Blair coming to the US to speak to Congress, there had been a plan to award him with a Congressional Gold Medal- this is an analysis of why the award was canceled. Palestinian leaders Arafat and Abbas have agreed to oppose Israel’s seige of Arafat.
From Russia- Great Britain sees Arafat as the legitimate leader of Palestine, despite Sharon’s attempt to make him irrelevant. Then a commentary on French President Chirac’s view that this is a multi-polar world, and that the US cannot dictate global affairs.
From Germany- A press review from Tuesday, covering the new Iraq council, German/US relations, and Sharon’s attempt to get Europe to sever all ties with Yassar Arafat.
From Cuba- A review of Dick Cheney’s role in misleading Americans about Iraq’s alleged weapons of mass destruction. Former UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter says that time has shown that the UN weapons team did a good job of eliminating the threat from Iraq. Nelson Mandela has called the failure to provide poor nations with affordable AIDS medications “a parody of human rights on a global scale.”
