Friends,

No decision was reached today in the deportation hearing for the 8 imprisoned ISMers. The lawyer for the State asked for a postponement and according to our lawyers will push to make an issue about the ISM, seeking to have us declared "illegal". Therefore the deportation of the 8 peace activists will be on the basis that they are part of the ISM and less about the activity that they were arrested for. The next hearing date will likely be on Tuesday, July 15, but we were not given an exact time yet.

Also, the ISMers were NOT released on bail, the prosecution being adament about depicting them as "great dangers to state security." SEE THE PRESS RELEASE AT THE END

SAMPLE LETTER:
Dear Sir,

Re: Imprisonment of 8 human rights activists

I have been informed that your office has ordered the arrest and
deportation of eight international human rights activists, who are now
incarcerated in Ariel Police Station, where they have been detained
since July 10 without any charges filed against them.

I kindly request you to release the eight human rights activists
from their prison cell .I kindly request you to cancel any deportation
proceedings being conducted against them. From the information we
have gathered from them and their lawyers, they were arrested solely
for doing humanitarian work in the West Bank, notwithstanding the
fact they were not involved in any violent action.

We are very much concerned about the imprisonment and deportation
of international humanitarian activists. It has been seen, time and
again, that the presence of an international observer subdues, if only
slightly, what is often the aggressive behavior of occupation soldiers
and settlers against Palestinian civilians.

Deporting non-violent human-rights activists can only give ammunition
to those who seek to ridicule and undermine the State of Israel.

I would kindly ask you to inform me of your decision, and will continue
to follow developments regarding this case.

Sincerely,

EIGHT PEACE ACTIVISTS THREATEN ISRAELI SECURITY
Trial postponed; Bail denied

[Tel Aviv] No decision was reached today in the case of the eight peace activists slated for deportation by the Israeli authorities. The prosecution asked for more time and the hearing was postponed until Tuesday July 15, though no specific time has been set yet. In addition, the 8 imprisoned ISMers were NOT released on bail - the prosecution, representing the state, being adamant on depicting them as "great dangers to state security." They were all transferred back to the Ariel settlement police station, where they will be held until the next hearing.

Israeli and international peace activists packed the Tel Aviv courtroom this afternoon, for a 1:30pm hearing, as the eight internationals were brought in. Lawyers for the 8 activists were: Shamai Leibowitz, Leah Tsemel, Gaby Lasky and Yoni Lehrnman. After approximately 5 minutes of proceedings, the prosecution asked for more time and the court was recessed. Advocate Shamai Leibowitz informs that the prosecution is looking to make this case more about the ISM and less about the individual activities of those arrested, seeking to deport the eight internationals based on their affiliation with the ISM.

Tobias Karlsson (SWEDEN)

Tarek Loubani (CANADA)
Fredrick Lind (DENMARK)
Bill Capowski (USA)
All arrested on Wednesday July 9 for sitting in a peace camp in Arrabony village near Jenin, to peacefully protest the confiscation of Palestinian land and the building of an apartheid wall, and:

Daniel Knutsson (SWEDEN)
Alex Perry (UK)
Saul Reid (UK)
Thomas Pellas (FRANCE)
All arrested on Thursday, July 10 for joining Palestinians in removing a roadblock that denies Palestinians the basic right of freedom of movement.

The State of Israel is grasping at straws in its attempt to brandish the ISM illegal. This strategy follows a list of efforts aimed at breaking the phenomena of international solidarity – from slander, denial of entry and deportations (approximately 60 in the last 15 months),to intimidation, physical threats, injury and even death. The Israeli government calls us a “threat to the security of the state”; Our most dangerous weapons are our eyes, ears, mouths and the truth.

3) Letter from an Israeli prison cell

The following are notes written by Canadian human-rights activist Tarek
Lubani, hand-written notes smuggled out of his Israeli prison cell, after
having been arrested by Israeli Army for doing humanitarian work with
Palestinians in a camp near Jenin:

July 10 2003 - 4 months 11 days for the man with ten kids who was charged
with driving a stolen car. Day 2 for me. It's easy to remain positive when I
know that friends and lawyers and perfect strangers all care about me being
released. The longest I'll stay is a few days or weeks. Palestinian
prisoners are some of the most easily forgotten victims of the illegal
Israeli occupation - out of sight, out of mind.

The man of 4 months and 11 days is forgotten by all but his family. What
does he share with them anymore? Nothing but memories.

10 July 2003 - Today, we woke up to the harsh flourescent 24-hour lights in
our prison cell. The light did not invite any of us to life. Nor did the
cold damp surroundings. We were not resting in our sleep but we were too
tired to be awake. The guards shrill screaming woke us finally, having to
bury through unconsciousness and lethargy in turn.

We were greeted with handcuffs and leg shackles before we got into a 1mX1.5m
compartment of a transporter. The four of us tried to be comfortable on
the tiny bench, but met only limited success. The time was 9:30 AM. Eight
and a half hours later, I barely remembered what movement without shackles
and handcuffs was like. We requested food for 2 hours before we finally got
some pastries, coca-cola and water. We requested our attornies no less than
a hundred times each. We refused to sign at least 2 Hebrew-only documents
and one English document.

Just before 6 PM we finally saw a lawyer. 30 hours had passed since our
original arrest. The lawyers were a breath of fresh air. They documented the
abuses against us and told us what would happen next. Their patience was
amazing. As predicted, the judge declared that she had no jurisdiction but
would grant an injuction against our immediate deportation. Lots of good
that will do! The government has constantly broken these injuctions and
illegally deported internationals. Still, it was a victory of sorts. Now we
sit back in Ariel, awaiting what comes next.

10 July 2003 - "A whole lotta of love!" He finally found a radio station he
liked and returned his hand from the dial while screaming along at the top
of his lungs. Now this was driving music. Zeppelin at their best. The van
barreled along at 150 km/h accelerating with the tempo of the Zeppelin. Oh
God. The part where the music screams, and he's screaming and going even
faster. In most other countries in the world, it would be a problem that he
had 4 shackled prisoners in the back seat and his police lights flashing. "A
whole lotta of love" Yoki (Jacob) could do this because he had three stars
on his shoulder. That made him the big man. Three stars allows you a lot of
privilege. When Tobias wouldn't hand over his passport, it was Yoki who
started beating him and nealy broke his arm. When I wouldn't sign
Hebrew-only papers without my lawyer, it was Yoki who said "When you mess
with me, you lose". As he drove like a madman, Yoki had our lives in his
hands, and we couldn't say a word. To say anything would have meant
punishment - no food, no blankets, no paper. Any one of these things. Maybe
all of them. And yet, Yoki remains completely unaccountable. He is part of a
system that promoted him, because of his childishness and instability, not
despite it. Nobody here talks about the man with three stars. To do so is to
subject oneself to a new world of pain. I can't help but wonder: If Yoki
beat us like this, what does he do to Palestinians who have virtually no
recourse to the brutality?

ISM works closely with Hamas and Islamic Jihad + Cowardly Killer McCrae

14.07.2003 09:26

The ISM - A Terrorist Protection Organization

-every time the ISM post on Indymedia, I will post this to enable people to have a balanced view of the organisation-

The International Solidarity Movement was founded in the spring of 2001 by George Rishmawi, George Qassis, Adam Shapiro, and Huwaida Arraf.

Rishmawi and Qassis were persuaded that "Israeli soldiers will hesitate to shoot Americans and Europeans protesting at checkpoints, lying in front of tanks, or removing roadblocks." They were impressed that "Three Bethlehem refugee camps hosting foreigners escaped Israeli incursions."

They had a vision. With the help of two aggressively anti-Israel Americans, Shapiro and Arraf, they hoped to persuade thousands of Europeans and Americans to enter the West Bank territories in order to block Israeli troops from entering refugee camps to search for weapons and arrest suspected terrorists; to prevent demolition of houses on the Egyptian border being used to conceal arms-smuggling tunnels; and to dismantle IDF road blocks in order to make it more difficult for the IDF to stop and search suspicious vehicles. "Imagine if we had thousands, what we could do." ("Non-Violent Activists: A Challenge to the Israeli Occupation." Report from a Palestine Center briefing by George Rishmawi and George Qassis This information first appeared in "For the Record", No. 115, 6 June 2002, Center for Policy Analysis in Palestine.

Although thousands of volunteers did not materialize, dozens of IMF volunteers came to Israel in the summer of 2001, and scores more came in the summers of 2002 and 2003, with smaller numbers in the winter months. The volunteers stay for as little as a week, although some stay for many months. They travel in groups, stay in the houses scheduled for demolition, dismantle roadblocks, stand in crowds of Palestinians lobbing rocks and Molotov cocktails at Israeli troops, and organize demonstrations jointly with Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

The immediate goal of the ISM is to hamper the ability of the IDF to prevent terrorist attacks on civilians. The ultimate goal is to eliminate the State of Israel. The ISM is "opposed to the existence of the apartheid colonial settler state of Israel." It not only seeks to destroy the State of Israel, it endorses the "right" of Palestinian Arabs to work to eliminate the Jewish State "by any means necessary." (See, Huwaida Arraf).

The ISM sees itself as working in tandem with the terrorist organizations, Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Al Aksa Martyrs Brigade. Those organizations use violent means, while the ISM undertakes such aggressive non-violent actions as blocking the progress of Israeli soldiers on their way to arrest terrorists. The intention of the ISM in these actions is to protect terrorists from interference by the IDF.

As Arraf and Shapiro have repeatedly stated, "we accept that Palestinians have a right to resist with arms, as they are an occupied people upon whom force and violence is being used." (Why Nonviolent Resistance is Important for the Palestinian Intifada: A Response to Ramzy Baroud, By Huwaida Arraf and Adam Shapiro; and Huwaida Arraf)

The International Solidarity Movement was founded a decade after Oslo and nearly a year after the Palestinian Authority was offered statehood in the summer of 2000. This armed struggle is not intended to create a Palestinian State side by side with the State of Israel, or to force Israel to withdraw from the disputed territories. The ISM endorses an armed struggle intended to eliminate the state of Israel and to replace it with a Palestinian State.

The ISM has not endorsed the Road Map. It continues its aggressive struggle against the IDF even as the government of Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas cooperates with the government of Israel to arrest terrorists and prevent terror attacks. (See sources 1, 2, and 3.)

The role of the ISM as a partner with terrorist organizations in the struggle to annihilate Israel has been laid out by the Movement's co-founders, Arraf and Shapiro. "The Palestinian resistance must take on a variety of characteristics, both non-violent and violent. But most importantly it must develop a strategy involving both aspects." (Adam Shapiro and Huwaida Arraf, Palestine Chronicle, January 2002) The ISM does not see itself as a non-violent alternative to such terrorist organizations as Hamas and Islamic Jihad. It is a complimentary part of the "resistance." Not surprisingly, given that the leadership both endorses terrorism and views the terrorism of Hamas and the non-violence of the ISM as two sides of the same coin of resistance, ISM volunteers appear to work closely with Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

The ISM is surprisingly explicit in its instructions to volunteers on their way to "occupied Palestine," aka, Israel. They are to contact Mr. Rishmawi on arrival, and they are told to follow the instructions that they will receive even though the ISM is "not affiliated with or taking orders from any one political party in Palestine," In other words, instead of taking orders from "any one" terrorist organization, the ISM volunteers take orders from several of them. "As an ISM volunteer we expect you to "be in contact with local activists and leadership" and to respect the guidance of those around you. Respect for their views and guidance should be your highest priority. (International Solidarity Movement Information Pack; These statements are found on p. 29 of this 44 pp. document intended as a handbook giving advice on everything from what to pack to how to speak to the media, i.e. "when violence is mentioned say resistance to injustice".) The meaning of these instructions is plain. The ISM volunteers in Israel are "expected" to make it their "highest priority" to follow the orders of the Palestinian "activists" with whom Mr. Rishmawi puts them in contact.

It is possible that some volunteers remain ignorant of the affiliations of the "local activists and leadership" from whom they are instructed to take orders. But Susan Barclay was aware that the men whose "guidance" she was instructed to follow represented the terrorist organizations Islamic Jihad and Hamas. Other volunteers may or may not have been aware of the affiliations of the "local activists and leadership." If, however, there are "local activists and leadership" that actively oppose Israeli "occupation" by means other than terrorism in the camps and villages of the disputed territories, their existence is unknown to Western and Israeli observers.

A recent demonstration serves as an example of the close cooperation between the ISM and the terrorist groups. The announcement read, "Join the ISM, the Palestinian National and Islamic Forces and the Apartheid Wall Defense Committee on Thursday July 3 to block construction of the Apartheid Wall that will completely isolate three villages in the Tulkarem region: Nazlit Issa, Baqa Sharqiya, and Nazlit Abu Nar from the rest of the Palestinian villages." (The Palestinian National and Islamic Forces is a coalition, or an umbrella organization, that includes a long list of terrorist organizations, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad; Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fateh); Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP); Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas); Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP); Palestinian People's Party (PPP); Palestinian Democratic Union (FIDA); Palestinian Popular Struggle Front; Palestinian Liberation Front; Islamic Jihad Movement; Arab Liberation Front; Palestinian Arab Front; Popular Front-General Command; Islamic National Salvation Party; and Popular Liberation War Pioneers)

In the strategy laid out by Rishmawi, Qassis, Shapiro, and Arraf, the presence of ISM volunteers will block IDF bulldozers sent to demolish houses in Rafah that conceal tunnels used to smuggle explosives and ammunition from Egypt and prevent the IDF from entering neighborhoods that harbor terrorists and bomb-making operations. The assumption is that if hundreds or even thousands of international volunteers could be induced to link arms and block the roads leading into Jenin or Tulkarem, the IDF would be prevented from entering these camps to arrest the Hamas and Islamic Jihad cells operating there. The ISM further assumes that if that enough people can be found like the tragically misguided Rachel Corrie who are willing to stand in front of houses in Rafah that conceal arms-smuggling tunnels, the IDF will be forced to abandon its efforts to destroy those tunnels. The international reaction to the death of Rachel Corrie appears to bolster this assumption. The story was reported as a tragedy and even as an atrocity, despite the fact that the house which this misguided young woman was standing in front of was concealing the entrance to a tunnel used to smuggle explosives to terrorists. And despite the fact that a careful investigation determined that the operator of the bulldozer could not see her from his place behind the wheel.

The ISM is a terrorist protection organization. The goal of the ISM is not to plant bombs and murder civilians. The ISM aims to protect the terrorists who plant bombs and murder civilians. The ISM hopes to keep the IDF out of Palestinian neighborhoods so that terrorists will be free to manufacture explosives, train suicide bombers, smuggle weapons, arm snipers, and fire rockets at residential neighborhoods without interference from the IDF. The ISM calls itself non-violent and many supporters of the organization in the U.S. may actually believe that this is a non-violent movement following the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. The leadership, however, is using the rhetoric of non-violence in a calculated effort to mask the true nature of the ISM, which is organized for the protection of terrorists.

Although the statements made by volunteers while in Israel appear to be carefully phrased so as to omit any mention of cooperation with terrorist organizations listed by the State Department, upon return to the United States they can be startlingly frank about the ISM's cooperation with terrorist organizations.

Susan Barclay, the ISM organizer deported by Israel after she hid Islamic Jihad terrorist Shadi Sukiya in the ISM office in Jenin, told the Seattle Post Intelligencer that, "she knowingly worked with representatives from Hamas and Islamic Jihad -- terrorist groups that sponsor suicide bombings and exist, according to their charters, to demolish the Jewish state entirely." (Seattle Post Intelligencer, Thursday March 20, 2003, Activist's death focuses spotlight on Mideast struggle, By SAM SKOLNIK, SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER)

When ISM leaders say "any means necessary," as they repeatedly do, they mean to endorse terror attacks on civilians. In a July 2003 interview, Adam Shapiro "justifies the Palestinian armed resistance against Israel as long as it is targeting Israeli soldiers and Jewish settlers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip." (The Star, Amman, Jordan, July 06, 2003, 10:15 AM, By Ghassan Joha, Star Staff Writer.)

Despite Shapiro's careful endorsement of the suicide bombing of civilians only in territory that was part of Jordan before Jordan invaded Israel in 1967, whenever a suicide bombing takes place inside pre-1967 Israel, ISM volunteers rush to the house of the suicide bomber, whom they describe as a martyr or shahid. They express solidarity with the suicide bombers and attempt by their presence to prevent the demolition of the houses of suicide bombers, a penalty imposed on terrorists by Israel.

The ISM's official statements endorse terrorist murder of civilians by using coded language, i.e. "by any means necessary" and by referring to the right of "armed resistance." In case anyone has missed the point that this is code for endorsement of suicide bombings, for package bombings of civilians, and for the random murder of civilians by terror snipers, the ISM sometimes underlines its approval with the word "unconditionally," as in "We unconditionally support Palestinians' human right to resist occupation and oppression by any means necessary." ISM organizers, however, occasionally forget to speak in code and actually say precisely what they mean.

Charlotte Kates, leader of the New Jersey chapter of the ISM and organizer of the ISM's third National Convention, scheduled to take place on the Rutgers campus from October 10-12, explained that the ISM supports suicide bombing. "We support Palestinians' right to resist occupation and oppression, and do not feel that it is our place as a solidarity movement to dictate tactics of resistance to the Palestinian people. Why is there something particularly horrible about "suicide bombing" - except for the extreme dedication conveyed in the resistance fighter's willingness to use his or her own body to fight?" (2003 by MidEastWeb and Ami Isseroff.)

It is possible that the ISM has at times given more than verbal support to suicide bombers. The ISM acknowledges that the two British Muslims who blew up the Mike's Place restaurant in Tel Aviv in April 2003 leaving 3 dead and 50 wounded had attended a meeting of International Solidarity Movement activists in Israel prior to carrying out their suicide bombing. While the nature of their connection with the ISM is unclear, it has been suggested that the ISM may have helped them to enter Israel. What is not disputed is that the ISM offers extensive training to volunteers on their way to Israel, coaching them carefully in ways to lie to Israeli passport control about the nature of their visit.

The facts of the March 27, 2003 incident during which ISM coordinator Susan Barclay attempted to bar the entrance of the ISM offices in Jenin to the IDF in order to prevent the arrest of Islamic Jihad terrorist Shadi Sukiya are not in dispute. Nevertheless, the incident, in which a self-styled 'peace activist' attempted to prevent the arrest of a known terrorist, may puzzle those who take the ISM at its word and believe that it is committed to non-violence. In reality, Ms. Barclay's actions serve as a paradigm for the ISM, an organization that seeks to protect the activities of terrorists by the use of such apparently non-violent means as standing in front of a locked door. As a loyal member of the ISM standing between an officer of the law bent on arresting a terrorist and a known member of Islamic Jihad, Ms. Barclay was simply doing the job that she had been brought to Israel to do.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At 1:30 am on November 19, 2002, Officer Dave Mobilio of the Red Bluff, California Police Department was refueling his patrol car when he was shot twice by a gunman who was waiting in ambush. The gunmen then walked up on Officer Mobilio and shot him a third time, at point blank range, in the back of the head.

The gunman was quickly identified as Andrew McCrae (born Andrew Mickel). His identification and arrest was due in no small part to the fact that after the cold-blooded, cowardly murder he bragged about it to family, and friends, and in a statement he posted on IndyMedia.

According to a second report, McCrae's family told an investigator that McCrae is 'an idealist'. He traveled to the Middle East last Christmas with the International Solidarity Movement and may have been arrested in the World Trade Organization protests in Seattle last spring.

The former Springfielder charged with murdering a California police officer was involved in 'peace' efforts in Israel, according to recently unsealed court documents.

Andrew Hampton Mickel traveled to Israel at about Christmas 2001 with the ISM, a group that supports violent attacks on Israeli civilians, according to a Nov. 26 inter-office communication written by then-Springfield Police Capt. Stephen P. Moody, who became Springfield's police chief Wednesday.

Mickel, 23, reportedly was frustrated by the Israelis' ability to circumvent the effort, Moody wrote in the document released by Tehama County Superior Court in California.

The gunman was a student at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, the school attended by Rachel Corrie and which is known as a hot-bed of support for ISM and other pro-Arab terrorist organizations.

Thankyou for your sources.

Now you are exposed!

Anyone who reads through these sources that have been posted as evidence by the ISM 'exposer' above will surely conclude that lies, misquotes and misinformation is an accurate description of what has been made of the sources given.

The lack of proof in any of them for what they are supposedly used to charge ISM volunteers with in this article is conclusive evidence that the author is fixated on a paranoid hate filled smear campaign which will not succeed.

No where do they prove a link between ISM and terrorism, other than in ISMers
daily work of helping those who suffer from terrorism-state terrorism-Israeli state terrorism-and the international state terrorism of western government indifference to Palestinian human rights.

Ceri.

Boo hoo... terror supporters like Ceri don't like the truth

15.07.2003 19:40

Erm... nice try Ceri. We don't have anything but your word that the ISM isn't a terrorist organisation, against a mass of sources proving their terror links. I challenge you to provide evidence of the ISM's commitment to peaceful protest, rather than association with murderers. The ISM smuggle weapons, harbour international criminals and provide support for attacks on Israeli civilians. I've shown you my evidence, now let's see some evidence to the contrary.

And then I'll sit down and do it again.

That seems fair to me.

Just one thing...

16.07.2003 13:15

...to the anti-ISMer:

define terrorism

mmm, recognise it in state form?

mmm, how did Israel come into existence again?

mmm, i have 3 friends working in ISM, all of whom are non-violent,
peace-loving do-gooders, who believe in using their privileged status of being
from the West, and thus treated as 'people' as opposed to being Arab and treated like
dogs, to block the daily assassination of Palestinian people, and the genocide being
carried out in the name of 'security'.

mmm, how many palestinians have died in the last 3 years at the hands of the Israeli state?

ISM must be defended: victory to the 'intifada'.

and no, while i'm not too happy about Israel's existence given the blood shed for its creation, i don't believe it should be destroyed

UnCivil Disobedience

I do not know whether the killing of Rachel Corrie, Tom Hurdall and Carlo Giuliani, and of 'voluntary human shields' in Iraq and other places, etc., were accidental or deliberate, but I support the right of legitimate states to kill such persons because they are saboteurs, and therefore, by extension, terrorists, and must be treated as such. It is better to legalize and to inflict the remedy of summary execution than to permit these criminals to succeed in destroying legitimate states.

I believe that it is hypocrisy for these criminals to cry when they are punished. They put themselves deliberately where they would be hurt, so let them take what they came for, and shut up the hypocritical whining.
