Re: energy medicine/positive proof of MW bio-effects

Hi Klaus: Recently you've had a number of postings related to energy medicine. Yesterday's DAILY MAIL (U.K.) carried the front page story with the caption "The 3-minute Hysterectomy" that the U.K. government's NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) has now approved the use of MEA (microwave endometrial ablation) as a quick and safe alternative to performing a hysterectomy. The process will soon be available also to NHS (national health service = comes free) patients at a saving to the exchequer of some £30 million per year. It is described as follows: "It [the treatment] uses a hand-held 'wand' emitting low-powered microwaves to remove the lining of the womb quickly and safely." And further details of the process is given on page 8: "The treatment, which has been pioneered by a Hampshire-based company, Microsulis, uses a handheld rod-shaped device which is inserted into the uterus. The surgeon cannot see inside the womb but is guided by a sensor which gives a read-out on a computer screen.

Microwave emissions from the 'wand' quickly heat up the tissue of the uterine wall, destroying it. The temperature is controlled at between 60 and 85C, ensuring there is no burning or scarring. MEA can also be used on patients with fibroids."

Help Needed
-----------
Dear Klaus,

Jesus Mendoza has asked me to pass the following along to your group. He desparately needs help.

As some are aware, Mr. Mendoza, a former law student at the Cooley Law School in Michigan, USA, was subjected to electromagnetic harassment in connection with a lawsuit he filed in the US federal courts, exposing first corruption at the School and ultimately the harassment itself.

He became electromagnetically sensitized and disabled by these exposures, which he documented with multiple meters and a video camera. He has nearly died many times, and has recently fled from Texas to Mexico.

His wife and young children have also been harmed.

To follow are some recent messages.

Thank you for any assistance you might provide,

Susan

New Australian research centre: Excellence or Spin?
---------------------------------------------------
Good news that Australia now has a Centre of Research Excellence in Electromagnetic Energy which will be receiving $2.5 million over five years, funded from a levy on telecommunications companies, and administered by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NH&MRC).

$2.5 million over 5 years may sound impressive but that's roughly the amount given away by the Federal Government in foreign aid every TWO DAYS. So much for a serious committment from the Howard Government.

Its also of interest that co-chair of the NH&MRC's expert committee on electromagnetic energy Professor Judith Black states (below) that studies carried out around the world had produced little evidence of any harmful effects caused by mobile phones!!

Little evidence?

When the NH&MRC's expert committee on electromagnetic energy was originally set up they were rightfully determined that it would be independent of industry influence as industry inclusion would have been seen as compromising the committee. (I have seen their letter stating this). However due to the need to include an RF/MW radiation expert on the committee a suitable expert was found who, by pure coincidence, was also a senior expert in the employ of Motorola.

Fortunately the committee was assured that his employment would not affect his advice on the committee. So now we have little evidence...

Sure, and I still believe in the Easter Bunny.

If you wanted advice on the health effects of secondhand tobacco smoke in the workplace would you really want to take the advice from a Tobacco Institute expert?

In effect that is what the NH&MRC has done with mobile phones. Lets hope they do not try to foist their opinions on the excellent research team at RMIT.

It will bear close watching to see how the Telcos try to influence the research for you can bet that the Telcos will employ their best (and totally independent of course) expert spin doctors to keep a lid on this one.

Centre to examine health risks of mobile phones
Date: July 6 2003

By Brendan Nicholson
Political Correspondent

RMIT will head a new national research centre to study possible health risks from mobile phones.

Health Minister Kay Patterson said the new Centre of Research Excellence in Electromagnetic Energy would receive $2.5 million over five years, funded from a levy on telecommunications companies, administered by the National Health and Medical Research Council.

The research centre will use the internet to link researchers at RMIT, the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science in South Australia, Monash University, Swinburne University of Technology and Telstra Research Laboratories.

This consortium will be headed by Professor Irena Cosic, from RMIT's school of electrical and computer engineering.

Senator Patterson said that while no one had conclusively established a health risk from the use of mobile phones, Australia's research effort in this area must be strengthened.

Co-chair of the research council's expert committee on electromagnetic energy Professor Judith Black said studies carried out around the world had produced little evidence of any harmful effects caused by mobile phones.

"The level of public anxiety and the potential for it to be a problem means we have to keep on the qui vive," she said.

"We decided to boost our research capacity in this field and prepare us not just to handle the potential for harm from mobile phones but also whatever the next big thing is on the horizon in this area."

Professor Black said technology was changing all the time and medical research had to keep pace.

"Just because we show that the current technology mightn't have harmful biological or health effects doesn't mean that the next wave of technology will also be side-effect free," Professor Black said.

"We have to keep ourselves up to speed constantly, constantly alert and constantly ready to fund it."

Professor Black said that it was possible that any harmful effect from using mobile phones might only show up over a long period of time.

"It's something we just have to be vigilant about," she said.

The Centre of Research Excellence in Electromagnetic Energy will combine the efforts of engineers, epidemiologists, physicists, psychophysiologists and veterinary pathologists.

PhD and post-doctoral students will be trained by six principal
investigators to help them deal with "whatever comes up and bites us next".

Professor Black said the centre would not duplicate the studies already under way around the world examining whether head, neck or brain tumours could be caused by mobile phones but will concentrate on neurological effects in areas such as the memory and blood pressure.

Ministerial Media Release
July 6, 2003 RESEARCH CENTRE TO STUDY THE POSSIBLE HEALTH EFFECTS OF
MOBILE PHONES AND TOWERS

A consortium of research institutions, led by the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, will establish a $2.5 million virtual research centre to study the possible health effects of emissions from mobile phones and mobile phone towers.

The Federal Minister for Health and Ageing, Senator Kay Patterson, today announced that the National Health and Medical Research Council would fund the consortium from Victoria and South Australia to establish a Centre of Research Excellence in Electromagnetic Energy.

The consortium, led by Professor Irena Cosic from RMIT, will receive $500,000 a year over five years to conduct research on possible health risks and boost research expertise in this area by providing research training and career development programs in EME-related areas.

"Although no one has conclusively established a health risk through the use of mobile phones, we need to broaden and strengthen Australia' s research effort in this area," the Minister said.

The consortium led by the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (Victoria), includes the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science (South Australia), Monash University (Victoria), Swinburne University of Technology (Victoria) and Telstra Research Laboratories (Victoria).

Comment from Robert Riedlinger to Don Maisch

Hi Don: I wonder why they don't hire Dr's Henry Lai,Hardell,Roger Santini,Ted Litovitz, or Olle Johansson. I can think of other real scientists that would probably like to spend five years in beautiful Australia. Could it be that the aforementioned would not accept money to come up with favorable results? The way I see it, just another five year stall, while they search for safer cellphones!!

The results of WHO study is due shortly,so they need another five year study to wait for, before they can determine if there is or is not a risk. Regards

Robert

Senator Patterson said that while no one had conclusively established a health risk from the use of mobile phones, Australia's research effort in this area must be strengthened.) It would appear that Senator Patterson has been too busy reading comic books and avoiding science research studies.

Professor Black said that it was possible that any harmful effect from using mobile phones might only show up over a long period of time. (Yha Like Thalidomide for instance) I can remember many complaints by pregnant women, that used thalidomide for morning sickness, before the government took it off the shelf. One could ask the children of those mothers how it feels to be a guinea pig.

Dear Leif

I do not want to impose on you, but we have a new website for IJOEH and I wonder if you would be willing to recommend it to your mailing list. You have a number of important contacts that could introduce the journal to regional libraries that serve occupational and environmental health readers.

The website is  http://www.ijoeh.com

Please look it over, and if you are willing to refer your colleagues to the website, we would be most grateful.
