Traffic accidents?

04.07.2003 15:50

You've GOT to be kidding. Take a look at Israeli news to get a sense of how many serious traffic accidents there are in Israel and the "territories". Israelis have a (well deserved) reputation for being terrible drivers which anybody knows who has ever sat in the passenger seat when one of them was behind the wheel. I recall one experience when such a one missed a turnoff, simply stopped, put it in reverse, and went back at about 40 mph! Like he was driving a tank and not a car. After a ride with one of them and you want to kiss the ground when you finally get out.

I realized afterwards that I should have provided some evidence about Israeli driving habits beyond that anecdote. After all, perhaps my experience was unique or they only drive crazy when abroad. So here is a "clip" from an Israeli news source.

Horrific Week On Our Roadways
15:25 Jul. 04, '03 / 4 Tammuz 5763

(IsraelNN.com) 19 motorists and pedestrians were killed on our roadways this week in motor vehicle accidents. The number does not include over ten persons killed last weekend, or fatalities from accidents this morning. Since Thursday night (26 June) until this morning, over 30 persons lost their lives in motor vehicle accidents. Dozens of persons were injured, some seriously. Just a short time ago, 16 persons were injured in the south in an accident between a minibus and a truck.

Since January 1, 2003, 228 persons were killed in motor vehicle accidents.

Police and government agencies continue to plead with the public to exercise caution while operating a vehicle and to refrain from driving if under the influence of alcohol or suffering from a lack of sleep. In addition, all occupants of vehicles, including the rear seat, are required by law and prudent judgment to buckle up!
